Fashionably late Mariah Carey keeps fans waiting an hour

Like all A-list celebrities she knows the importance of being fashionably late. Having started her week by keeping TV presenter Phillip Schofield waiting for nearly an hour, Mariah Carey saw no reason to speed up for the thousands who had braved the icy weather to watch her turn on Christmas lights.

Sealing her reputation for lateness, the superstar singer kept the crowd at Europe's biggest shopping arcade waiting for nearly an hour as she enjoyed a few glasses of champagne in her hotel suite with husband Nick Cannon at the Dorchester Hotel, just three miles away.

With pink, rather than red and white as the dominant colour, her fans would have been forgiven for not realising her appearance had a festive connection. Her fantastically extravagant appearance at London's Westfield shopping centre brought pandemonium. Hundreds of fans waited on the venue's Southern Terrace, which had been lit up by pink lights at, of course, Ms Carey's request. Meanwhile, thousands more crammed inside ahead of her arrival.

When the star finally did arrive at the venue, she was given a presidential-style escort, with bodyguards surrounding her black Mercedes Benz limousine as she was driven just 100 yards down the terrace. As Ms Carey stepped out of the car, vast plumes of pink and white confetti were blasted out over the crowd. They were all shaped like butterflies - Ms Carey's favourite insect - at her insistence. The singer had already had a string of extravagant requests denied due to health and safety, including her desire to be surrounded by 100 white doves and 20 white kittens.

Once inside the venue, Ms Carey disappeared for 15 minutes to rearrange her hair and make-up. She then emerged to an indoor firework display and yet another blast of confetti before addressing the crowd and saying: "Thank you so much for coming. I love you all."

She was joined on stage by eight children from the charity, Help A London Child, before waving a wand to signal the lights being turned on. After just two minutes on stage, she then disappeared for an album signing session with a collection of competition winners.

Ms Carey had arrived late, apparently, because she had been enjoying a few glasses of champagne in her hotel suite with husband Nick Cannon. He admitted last month: "We are always late for everything. That is probably the main thing I've gotten used to. It feels pretty weird for me."

Phillip Schofield lashed out as Mariah was an hour late for her pre-recorded interview on This Morning this week. While in 2005, she was alleged to have turned up 90 minutes late to the Capital Radio Awards because of a broken fingernail.

After leaving the hotel, Ms Carey told the Mail: "I'm really excited to be in London. It's one of my favourite cities in the world." Following her appearance at the shopping centre, Ms Carey was last night due to attend a £200,000 party, which she had arranged, at the plush Jalouse nightclub in Mayfair, central London.

She was due to arrived in a customised £300,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom that has an ice-white leather interior with faux-fur and was adorned in butterfly prints. The car had been spray-painted over the weekend especially. Ms Carey had also asked for £50,000 worth of Angel champagne to be flown in. She is, of course, the face of the brand of fizz. She also requested the club be decorated with white roses, white drapes and vanilla and strawberry scented candles.
