About Nick from Canada:
I've been a Mariah fan since 1994 when my cousin (a die hard Mariah fan) made me memorize the lyrics to "Hero" - the first song I knew by heart. Little did she know she would create a monster whose fandom outlasted hers lol.

#Beautiful (37,735)

I hate the hashtag, tremendously. However the song is so catchy, melodic, fresh and well-sung, I'll simply overlook the symbol. The song is pop genius in my opinion, and her best single since "We Belong Together". I hope she finds a radio audience for this song.

Mariah/Miguel collaboration (37,623)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
What's wrong with a collaboration if it's done right? Remember "I'll Be There", "Endless Love", "One Sweet Day"? The common factor for those songs is quality music. The reason why her recent collaborations weren't commercial successes was because they were too old school ("When Christmas Comes"), just plain stupid ("AIWFCIY" with Bieber), or residual singles off a flop album that was never going to be successful anyway ("Up Out My Face", "Angels Cry"). I think it's ridiculous to say a song will not be successful because it's a duet. Songs aren't successful because they suck or the people don't care for them. If Mariah and Miguel can get together and make something hot, she has a shot to get a hit. Both Pink and Rihanna have Top 10 hits right now with a duet/collaboration, so why can't Mariah?

Almost Home is a soundtrack song (37,316)
by Nick from Canada

How many soundtrack songs dominate the charts? This is just a song for Disney. She might get a Golden Globe nomination, Oscar nomination and maybe even a Grammy nomination for Song for Visual Media, but I am in no way expecting this song and sound from Mariah to dominate any popular music chart. It might do well in Adult AC. Let's not put unrealistic expectations on this track. I adore this song for one reason and that's the purity with which Mariah sings it. I personally don't care if Mariah hits #1 or not anymore, because I feel like she has accomplished more than 99% of all musical artists and will go down as one of the most talented and decorated vocalists, songwriters, and producers of all time. I just want to hear "the voice" minus that annoying whisper register. I want to be taken back to the days of Emotions or Music Box when her voice was strong and could do no wrong. "Almost Home" comes close for me and thank you Mariah for that.

Mariah's chart success (37,306)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
I want Mariah's chart success to be because she released an undeniable hit with mass appeal, not because her fans helped manufacture success. I don't want a Mariah song to hit #1 and then drop to #50 the following week. Longevity on the charts is a big deal. As a huge Mariah fan, it really isn't my job to make Mariah successful. First and foremost, that's Mariah's job by writing, recording, and releasing good material. When she does that, she's usually very successful.

Wow, there were glimpses of her old voice in some of these clips. It just confirms what I've been saying for a while: she has not lost her voice. It has changed, and it certainly has more limitations than before, but she can still do so much and it sounds beautiful. I loved hearing some of the older stuff. Very nostalgic indeed.

Jimmy Fallon performance (36,904)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
I was taken aback by a YouTube comment which stated that AIWFCIY should be Mariah's 19th number one single. I cannot agree more. It's ironic that a singer who is known for her impressive collection of number one hits didn't top the chart with arguably her most classic record. I loved this Jimmy Fallon performance. I probably watched it about ten times already tonight. This is Mariah at her best.

Mariah's evergreens will be determined by radio play (36,818)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
It's difficult to speculate on what people will or will not remember. Yes, Mariah is known as the singer of Hero, but Hero isn't really played on the radio anymore. To this day, I hear I'll Be There, Emotions, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby and We Belong Together now and then on AC/mix radio. And of course All I Want For Christmas Is You is an annual hit. I think these songs will encompass her "evergreens". Those who do not cite Emotions, specifically, are crazy. I hear that song on the radio the most aside from AIWFCIY.

Tommy did help, but Mariah owns her success (36,767)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
Tommy was able to harness Mariah's talent to make her a superstar. The key words in that sentence is "Mariah's talent". Without Mariah's voice and songwriting prowess, this discussion is moot. Who knows if Mariah would have seen the same kind of success under a different label or mentor? What we do know was that big-voiced divas were hot commodities when Mariah was emerging, so it is plausible to assume that she would have made a name for herself regardless of Tommy. While Tommy did pigeonhole Mariah as a conservative balladeer in her early days, it was Mariah who wrote and co-produced her material, so you can't give the big boss all the credit for her success. He may have told her what road to take, but Mariah drove the car. If we think of the things that makes Mariah great as an artist, and the things she'll be remembered for, it's #1 her voice and #2 her ability to write hit melodies. I'm sorry, but that's all Mariah.

Mariah's new project (36,741)
by Nick from Canada
| |
|
|
I like Triumphant's message, but I'm hoping it isn't a sign of things to come. I am mostly hoping Mariah turns introspective on this album. With marriage, a difficult pregnancy and the birth of beautiful twins, she has more than enough inspiration to write some beautiful songs about love, triumph through adversity, and motherhood. Trying to cater to a younger crowd should not be her objective anymore.
