About Edouard from France: Favourite song ever : Always Be My Baby......and Butterfly.....and..

Re: Divas Live 1998 (94,795) (94,798) by Edouard from France
Make it Happen (Divas Live) is elegant, smart and iconic. Even her little speech at the very beginning is witty. "I'm doing my best to be a diva." Pause, wait for it. "This evening". So smart. Like saying "You think I'm a diva and I can be, but it's all for the show." I always thought it was a great way for her to seem both empowered and humble at the same time. Like I'm not in the same category as Aretha Franklin y'all... yet.

I agree with Terna. Everything he said basically. This version of Make it Happen is the first time I ever heard Mariah back in December '98 on TV. I remember being surprised by her voice like is it the same person who sings with such a clear tone on record? And then I realized that her voice here is just as great. It's live and it's pure gospel. The MSG version is amazing but also very watered down in a way, very pop. The Divas Live version is like a declaration.

I believe it is my very favorite live song from Mariah. The original version of the Emotion album lacks energy IMO. In the Divas Live version, everything about it screams stage presence, faith, love and empowerment. And the whole "I know you're all music industry people but you can get up" part is so commanding without ever sounding put on or arrogant. This is a celebration of her life and career so far. I can't help but wonder: is it the first time we ever got a chance to see Mimi on TV?

Anyway, vocally speaking the singers on this messageboard know what it takes to put on a performance like this. And even with a cold (Mariah was sick that night) her musicality here is pure magic because it is creative. A true artist. Love that woman.

Her name twice on the cover (94,555) by Edouard from France
The title is not expected. And why should it be? Mariah knows how to intrigue. I actually like the title now that I have thought about it and that I feel I can see where she is going with this. She's not having her whole name written twice on the cover for nothing. I believe this book is going to be perception versus reality of who Mariah is. The meaning of Mariah Carey to a bunch of people and entities:
- in terms of money to the industry, corporate world she talked about in her Variety speech.
- in terms of talent and contribution to music and other artists maybe
- in terms of inspiration to people, to her lambs especially as a multiracial woman who has had to overcome so much and has always been vocal about it without saying to much and yet allowing us to feel her in her songs and find solace in them as well
- in terms of love to her kids and family
- in terms of faith and self-belief, how she's finally at peace with who she truly is outside of those outside lenses, how she feels whole now and as dissociated as before, not torn between all these versions of herself
I love this woman.

Yeah. I really like his videos. He's such an rnb lover. Willing to expand his knowledge of the genre. He reminds me of me. I remember listening to the rnb hiphop quiet storm segments in the middle of the night a while back.

Hi Terna. I love Alone in Love. Very subdued, very simple, elegant and mature. For some reason it reminds me of some Phill Collins' slow jams from the time. Very quite storm 80's RnB also. BTW, I too remember my radio taping days.

Must see video (94,355) by Edouard from France
Hey everyone. Check out this video. I had seen it before but never really paid attention to Mariah's body language here. She did not expect to win a Soul Train award and it shows. She even seems to be uncomfortable at some point. After she won her third you can see [Tommy Mottola] jump out of his sit while clapping. He's ready to join Mariah backstage. I wonder if she was overwhelmed or if something unpleasant happened between them between her wins that forced her to be this quick while delivering her winning speech.

What Andrew said, especially his choice of words, is pure indecency. Thank you webmaster for allowing my message. And yet, how come such blatant insensitivity is permitted on this board? I don't understand. Don't wish to.

Must see Glitter promo video (94,250) by Edouard from France
Hi everyone, very interesting video about the resurgence of the video uncovers what I believe is a never-before-seen promo video from the Glitter era. It seems to me that the story line of the movie was to be different: no so focus on the making of a star thing, more about the love story, the whitewashing of Billie's music, her choice not to go with the corporate guys, etc. The music on the album also would have been different. Mariah mentions a collaborative effort with Prince. She throws a little shade at Mottola and Lopez, alludes to plagiarism and not wanting to be blamed. Check it out.

Re: 8th Grade (94,239) (94,244) by Edouard from France
One of my instant favs on Caution if not my fav. I believe the song is about her relationship with Packer and how it echoed the childish type of relationships you tend to put on a pedestal when you're young, when you're in 8th grade. Genius lyrics.

Y'all gotta hear this (93,719) by Edouard from France
I rediscovered this song today. I love, love, love the original. the production still sounds so cool but this version is awesome and allows us to hear Mariah's vocals in a more prominent way. Enjoy.

PS Is it me or are there addlibs not featured on the original bridge?

Re: Do You Know Where You're Going To (93,548) (93,555) by Edouard from France
Hi, actually the song was a radio airplay song here in France. I remember hearing it constantly for about 1 month, right before Heartbreaker was released in september 1999. The "other version", well let's just say "we don't know it".

Re: ABMB iHeart (93,460) (93,462) by Edouard from France
Mariah did a great job. I believe she didn't sing the bridge because it wouldn't have been appropriate to belt out in such an intimate setting. It would have been too much and that part of the song requires a stamina which is would be hard and awkward to achieve in this type of setting, honestly. I like how soft and comforting the rendition was.

Re: Re: Signature song (92,015) (92,017) (92,025) by Edouard from France
Hi everyone. Actually I would say that Without You is her signature song here in Europe. It is her "I will always love you"/"My heart will go on". Actually I believe Mariah has at least 5 or 6 signature songs that have become a template for other songs.
1990 - Vision of love: The Magna Carta of melisma. The song that real singers study. Especially in the US.
1992 - Hero: Personal, inspirational.
1993-Without You: It is the European version of "Vision of love". It is Mariah's breakthrough on a more global scale. To this day it is the Mariah ballad everybody everywhere knows.
1994 - All I want for Christmas is You: Pretty obvious by now.
1995 - Always be my Baby: The perfect RnB/Pop combo. Another template. One of those cool songs you don't have to be a fan to love. And who doesn't frankly?
2005 - We Belong Together: Same.
Actually all I want for Christmas is a song from today in a way. So I believe Mariah's been able to turn one of her 2 decade old song into another signature song. Amazing. Happy holidays everyone.

Re: Legends Ball (91,114) (91,124) by Edouard from France
Hey, the funny thing to me is that I absolutely see nothing wrong with the "reason" you brought up. How can you sing your best with a cold? How can you sing your best or at all for that matter when you've just been through a miscariage in the public eye? Mariah may not be her best all the time but one thing's for sure: she always gives 100% of what she has to give in the moment. She's human. Let's not forget that lambs.

One of Mariah's most revealing interviews ever (90,994) by Edouard from France
I had never seen it. It's from 2002. It requires a little effort to ignore the German translation but it's really worth it. interesting and in depths look at her life. Mariah goes more into details here and she does it with simplicity and authenticity. love it

MC in France, 1990 (90,541) by Edouard from France
Hi everyone, I stumbled (again) on this MC clip. It's 1990 and I guess Mariah and her team (Mottola) were trying to introduce her to the european market.

For those who've red MC's latest interview in Love Magazine it is interesting to remember that breaking the global market back then was pretty bold. Especially for a new artist. Especially for a young woman.

I guess they didn't have a lot of money to do the trip because MC's singing on national French TV (a very prominent show at the time with strong weekly audience) on a track with no backing support from her fiends/back up singers.

She's shy, she's not a ease and doesn't sing her a** off here. It almost sounds like karaoke. But she's all alone on this huge stage in front of a sitting audience that doesn't speak her language and that is not used to hearing R&B music. Brave.

I love how at the end you can feel that she's a bit scared, yet has a sense of humour when she says "merci". For those who don't speak French it's also very easy to understand what the presenter, Jacques Martin, says. Very eloquent. Mariah is still an unknown. Yet her voice and talent are undeniable. Love how everybody is saying "une autre, une autre" at the end. That's what we say in France when we simply just want "another one, another one" like an "encore" which is a french word BTW Watch it, watch it.
