Mariah surpasses Madonna in the US
According to the latest official information provided by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Mariah Carey's sales have surpassed Madonna's in the United States. Carey has just received a third platinum certification for her #1 album "The Emancipation of Mimi". According to the RIAA, Mariah Carey has sold over 61.5 million albums in the United States.
According to the same source, Mariah Carey has 10 multi-platinum titles: 1990's "Mariah Carey" (9x), 1991's "Emotions" (5x), 1993's "Music Box" (10x, equivalent to the RIAA's diamond award), 1994's "Merry Christmas" (5x), 1995's "Daydream" (10x), 1997's "Butterfly" (5x), 1999's "Rainbow" (3x), and 2005's "The Emancipation Of Mimi" (3x), as well as the 1992 "MTV Unplugged" EP (3x) and the 1998 compilation "#1's" (5x). Less successful are the compilation "Greatest Hits", the soundtrack "Glitter", and Mariah's first studio album in Island Def Jam "Charmbracelet". These three titles have received only one platinum certification.
Together all these titles sum the amazing sales of 61.5 million of albums sold in the United States. However, we are ignoring single sales from platinum titles such as "One Sweet Day" and "Emotions". As well as other hit singles such as "I Still Believe" and "My All".
After selling 61.5 million albums in the US, Mariah Carey is ranked as the second best-selling female artist of all time in the United States, only surpassed by Barbra Streisand who has sold 70.5 million. Mariah left behind Madonna with 60 million. Mariah Carey is also the best-selling female artist worldwide having surpassed the 155 million of records sold. (Mariah Hero)
