Mariah Carey will be far away from Times Square

Mariah Carey is headed south for the new year. The iconic diva revealed on Friday that she'll be welcoming 2019 with a performance at a St. Barts resort after spending the two past years on stage in Times Square. "I am excited to ring in the new year at Nikki Beach with my family, loved ones and everyone who joins the festivities," the 48-year-old told Us Weekly. "St. Barts is a special island and it will be a great place to start 2019."

The change in location follows her two Times Square performances: one in 2016 when she lip-synced and stumbled her way through her segment, claiming that her inner ear monitors weren't working properly, and the following year for a redemption performance - but couldn't help demanding a hot cup of tea on live TV.

After the 2016 debacle, drama ensued where she blamed the "New Year's Rockin' Eve" production company for giving her a faulty earpiece, which host Ryan Seacrest shut down immediately. "They put on the biggest live music events and they know what they're doing, and I know how good they are at their jobs," he said a few months after the mishap. "So my reaction was, she was working with the best - I find it hard to believe they made big mistakes that night."

In the following year, Carey took the stage on a freezing New York night and sang her classic ballads including "Vision of Love" and "Hero" without a hitch, but her inner diva emerged when the cup of tea she requested wasn't on stage. Thankfully, St. Barts is too warm for tea anyway. This will be the venue's first event since Hurricane Irma.
