Those down for the Mariah Carey derby now include Elektra, Island Def Jam, ArtistDirect and Jive, as whisperers whisper that none will make the deal without first sitting down with Carey to see how much guidance she's willing to take. Meanwhile, word of researcher John Coleman making his perceptual study of Carey available to label clients reaches executive ears. Said study, commissioned by Virgin prior to the release of Glitter, reportedly shows that Carey has "confused" her audience, with her pop fans disliking her forays into hip-hop and the hip-hop community not finding her credible.
