Airline scrimp on movie choices

Some airlines have found another way to cut costs: show older movies, according to Inflight Productions, a London company that provides films to 15 carriers. Before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, airlines generally booked films about three months after they first appeared in the theaters, spending $150 million to $200 million a year. Now more carriers are ordering movies that have been released earlier, Inflight Productions said.

Continental Airlines this month is showing "Shakespeare in Love" and "Hope Floats", both produced in 1998. But a Continental spokesman said those movies were chosen not because they were cheaper but because they were "contemporary classics" and because the airline was showing love-themed movies this month. Continental's February movie program includes "Planet of the Apes", "The Kid" and "Glitter", the flop starring the singer Mariah Carey.
