Mariah Carey in talks with record labels over re launch

Troubled singer Mariah Carey is in talks with several labels for a return to music - even though everyone involved refuses to admit it. The curvy star was bought out of her massive contract with music giant EMI in January after a number of serious blows to her career last year, including mental problems and a flop debut movie venture.

However, Carey's spokeswoman confirms Carey is on the comeback trail, as record company sources admit they still see a lot of potential in one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. The singer's representative tersely says of her boss's plans, "Mariah is talking with several companies."

But, according to record industry sources, Carey has been in talks with several major labels, including Vivendi Universal's Island Def Jam, RCA, and Elektra, owned by AOL Time Warner's Warner Music Group. Whilst any deal will be valued below her A$196 million deal with EMI subsidiary Virgin, one record company executive, quoted by Reuters news agency, says, "She doesn't need a lot of money at this point. She just needs someone to distribute her music. People still think she's a very marketable brand."

In other Mariah news, four fans who saw a special on Mariah screened on MTV [where Carey promises her spare room to fans] turned up at her Manhattan apartment expecting to stay but were turned away. Carey publicist explains, "Speaking in broken English, the kids explained that they saw the guest room on MTV and they came to stay with Mariah. But the room is actually where Mariah keeps all of her fan mail and gifts." Despite the misunderstanding, kind-hearted Mariah put up the four girls in a nearby four-star hotel.
