Survival song

Every woman on the planet empathised with the scene as Renee Zellweger, playing movie singleton Bridget Jones, sat alone on her sofa hysterically miming the words to Jamie O'Neal's over-the-top power ballad, All By Myself. But we should be careful which songs we tune into, says Dorothy Macic, who has been studying the effect music has on women for a new book called Respect: Women And Popular Music.

But now the tide is turning and women all over the world are being inspired by sassy songs that make them feel good about themselves. Dorothy said that Aretha Franklin's Respect, Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive and Mariah Carey's Hero are three of the most outstanding examples of women changing their attitude to themselves through music.

She said: "Every woman knows the words to these songs because they make her feel good about herself. Aretha sings about how she comes home, gives her man all her money and what she demands in return is respect."

Many thanks to Mariah's Web.
