Recording giants mum over Mariah's signing rumours

Two US recording giants were on Friday tightlipped over reports that beleaguered diva Mariah Carey, recently paid $28 million to quit her record label, was poised to sign a new contract. The New York Times on Friday quoted industry sources as saying that Carey was "in advanced negotiations" with other labels and could make a decision on a new deal as early as next week.

"We do not comment on such rumours," said a source at Universal Music Group's Island Def Jam label, reported to be one of the labels in talks with the songstress. Warner Music Group, also reported to have made Carey an offer following her golden handshake from EMI Group's US label Virgin Records after the commercial failure of her last album and an emotional breakdown, also declined to comment.

Carey, who has had more number one songs than any other artist with the exception of musical royalty Elvis Presley and The Beatles, quit Virgin with her pockets full in late January following the flop of Glitter. Now, instead of taking an expected break from the industry, she is reportedly ready to sign a contract for fewer albums - around three, instead of four - for a "fraction" of her $80 million EMI contract.

"Terms being discussed are as little as a $5 million advance for each album," the New York Times quoted sources closed to the deal as saying. Glitter, released alongside 31-year-old Carey's flop film of the same name, has sold just two million copies - a far cry from sales the past chart-toppers of the New York-born star who shot to fame in the 1990s.
