Carey in record deal talks

It is being reported that troubled singer Mariah Carey is in talks with a record company which could result in a new recording contract. In January record company Virgin paid £19.6 million to extricate itself from its £70 million five-album deal with the 31-year-old.

She is now said to be in advanced negotiations with a new record company for a three-album deal which could be worth £3.5 million per record. The contract would be worth a fraction of the record-breaking deal she signed with Virgin last year - but would allow her to attempt a chart comeback.

Her album Glitter and the film that accompanied it were critical and commercial flops. In July 2001 Ms Carey left rambling messages on her website and was admitted into a hospital, suffering what was described as a "breakdown".

It is claimed she is in talks with Universal Music Group's Island Def Jam label - which has rap artists including Jay Z among its stable of singers. The label is seen as one of the world's premier rap labels and would bring Ms Carey fresh credibility in the music world after her flops.

She has also received offers to join Warner Brothers Records and Elektra Entertainment Group - both of which are divisions of media giant AOL Time Warner. A spokeswoman for Ms Carey said she was meeting with many executives and taking time to make her final decision.
