Mariah spent birthday on St Maarten

Mariah Carey knows how to throw herself a party. The songbird is whooping it up on an island with friends to celebrate her 32nd birthday, according to her publicist. Carey is likely thrilled to kiss the last year goodbye. A nervous breakdown, the box-office disappointment of "Glitter", sluggish sales of her last album and a broken major-label deal would make any diva shudder. Add to that a Worst Actress award at the Razzies.

Through it all, Mariah has stood tall. Her charitable efforts alone are commendable, dedicating time to Sept. 11 relief fund-raisers and concerts and performing for troops stationed in Kosovo. Carey also showed up to sing the national anthem at this year's Super Bowl.

These days, things are looking much brighter for the "Someday" siren. Now in talks to head up her own label, Mariah could potentially follow in the footsteps of Madonna's Maverick label success. And unlike Madonna, whose films have always been panned, critics have given Mariah's new film, "Wise Girls", kinder reviews.
