Mariah marks 35th birthday, and new album, in London
Sunday 27 March 2005
Pop diva Mariah Carey celebrated her 35th birthday in style but insisted: "I don't
have anniversaries." The US singer - one of the best-selling female vocalists of the
1990s - arrived fashionably late for her party, which was also the official launch
of her latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi".
Wearing a flowing white dress and diamonds she said: "I don't have anniversaries and
this is the launch of 'The Emancipation of Mimi'. It's a very happy day for me, I'm
very excited." She went on to joke: "It's the anniversary of my 12th birthday."
Of her new album, she said: "It's a good-time album, a good feeling record. It's the
first time I've had a great experience making a record from top to bottom." Guests
packed the Tantra club in London's West End for a VIP reception as Carey arrived with
her entourage.
The club had laid out a gold sparkly carpet for her to walk on and one of her minders
insisted she had a fan and a bottle of water opened for her in the VIP area. Earlier in
the week, Carey proved her diva credentials by arriving over an hour late for an awards
night. Staff at her hotel also laid out a red carpet lined with candles for her overnight
check-in.
