Whitney Houston: The Ultimate Collection

This is one for the romantics - a superb collection of love songs brought to you by that beautiful creamy-chocolate voice of Miss Houston. "Ultimate Collections", "Best Of's" and "Top Hits" are all the rage every year over the festive season. Some are last breath gasps from has-beens but if you pick through the bunch carefully, occasionally a gem pops up. This album is one of those.

There are good songs in this collection, most of them from the '80s and '90s, when she was at her best. Among them are two personal favourites: "I Will Always Love You" and "Didn't We Almost Have It", which she sings beautifully. "When You Believe", which she sings with Mariah Carey and "If I Told You That", a duet with George Michael, are both impressive too, reminding one of the talent that was squandered over the past few years - reportedly due to a drug addiction she's now beaten.

"The Ultimate Collection" has magic woven in it. She is a superb entertainer, full of energy, bubbling like a bottle of newly opened champagne and this is one of those albums that has a refreshing ever-green quality about it. It paves the way for what should be a remarkable comeback later this year...
