Don't forget about us

Want to know one of the cool things about Facebook? There is a group dedicated to people who attended my summer camp in the 1980's. An entire group. When I discovered this, I nearly wet my pants. They even posted pictures. Yay, right? Well, yay and nay. Pictures of oneself circa 1984 usually prove to be quite frightning and mine are no exception. They are so bad, I won't even post one here. No, I swear I won't.

Anyhow, it is a very good thing I joined Facebook and discovered that these hideous pictures of myself had been posted on the web for all to see and make fun of. But, even better is I connected with all these old camp friends.

The camp I attended for years was called Usdan Camp For The Creative And Performing Arts. It is a day camp where kids can study all of the arts. I was a drama major and I loved every single summer. It is the place where I learned that actors like to wear all black, Dreamgirls is the greatest musical ever, and some boys like other boys. Usdan is a big camp on Long Island and if you are a kid growing up in the New York metropolitan area and liked the arts, chances are you went to Usdan. I went there for six years. You want to hear the craziest thing? Totally awesome husband grew up in the town where Usdan is. That's right - for six years, I attended camp down the road from my future husband's abode.

Like I said, if you like to sing and dance and were from Long Island, you probably went to Usdan. Mariah Carey went to Usdan. And I attended with her. I tell people this all the time and they never believe me. Now, thanks to Facebook, I have photographic evidence:

See that girl in the red shirt in the front row, looking up? That is Mariah freaking Carey. Where am I? I am in, like the second/third row. You can't see my face, but I have blue ponytail holders in my hair. You can see the top of my head. Obviously, we were arranged by talent. I think we are rehearsing Annie Get Your Gun. I remember that Mariah Carey had a very nice voice and cheated at Spit. I might have been better than her at Chinese Jacks, but I can't really remember. We traded stickers once. Here is a better picture of her:

She and that girl in the middle used to dress alike and walk around and act like they were better than all of us. Well, at least Mariah was. I wonder where that Mariah bff is now? I have an idea: maybe she should go on Facebook and befacebook friend Mariah. Or, just do what I do. Tell everyone you went to camp with Mariah Carey and you hate her and would never ever own a single one of her albums. Then, go on iTunes and purchase like, half a dozen of her songs under the guise that they are "catchy".
