About RibbonB from USA: I love Mariah's Music.

Re: Not that it matters (96,169) (96,179) by RibbonB from USA
She said previously that they thought he was Cuban, then it was determined Venezuelan. The book indicates he wasn't around, so there is no familiarity or real details about him.

Lovecraft Country (96,168) by RibbonB from USA
Licia, everyone, anyone else into this fabulous series? Wow, please watch this past Sunday's episode 9. So timely, sad, creatively done in homage to the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre. This episode was so good and harrowing, that the show composer even wrote an original requiem piece for the final fire scene. So moving. The final episode if the season is next Sunday, please binge all week and watch. it is horror though, but so well done. I love how they incorporated modern music like Bodak Yellow and Rihanna's Bitch Better Have my Money, into this period show. This show and its exploration or racism and horror is definitely more important than somebody's imagined slight at Celine. This country, world has more serious concerns.

Wow, based on all the hashtags on their IG post, they really want to be recognized. Too bad, because it probably won't help. I'm more surprised she didn't mention Jasmine Dotiwala, but she didn't want to tell those stories about Betcha Gon ' Know, lol. You can't put everything and everybody in a book though. She could've "killed two birds ", by including lots of pictures of moments with descriptors as a fast way to acknowledge people. I strongly feel she was stingy on the pictures.

It was adopted pretty recently and is probably often debated. But stuff changes over and with the times. Conventions do change.

Currently that is the standard practice to capitalize black. There are efforts to capitalize white as well, but it's common practice. Social constructs often change over time.

Re: Trash (96,114) (96,120) by RibbonB from USA
Did you read any history books that said it was created for financial gain, by slave owners who raped the women, but in order to maintain their property deemed their own offspring as slaves and therefore black? Just because the origins of things and oppression create a social construct that becomes inconvenient for white people, doesn't mean it hasn't affected the oppressed in more permanent ways. Social constructs change over time, but it's interesting that the construct of racism and so called white supremacy, remains strong. Some of y'all believe that lie and fight for it even to your, or their own detrement. Like the people who get mad when people say black lives matter. Hating a slogan because they just want to feel central at all times.

Just because he has meaning to you, doesn't mean he means shit to her. Of course if she had mentioned the clown in the Divas chapter, that would've been the penultimate shade. The ultimate is not giving him space at all.

Re: The good and the bad (96,089) (96,097) by RibbonB from USA
Clarification, in the book the dinner party was described as with music industry friends etc. At an Italian restaurant frequented by music industry illuminati. It's just most artists never refer to that and most don't want to be associated with the word. I just thought that was random and funny to use that descriptor.

The good and the bad (96,089) by RibbonB from USA
My thought on the book are it is overall a good read. Ill start with a big told ya so that no she won't talk about the voice, the clown, the stellar error and many other things people were salivating to read about. Smart of her not to give any more time or real estate to any of those things. I also didn't expect much self reflection by way of her taking any blame, or mentioning her part in breakups, shakeups, etc. But I am glad she was able to open up about all her childhood traumas and fears and subsequent PTSD. I was bored stiff through all the Tommy stuff. She and her co writer did an effective job, if she wanted the reader to feel as bored and trapped as she felt during the marriage.

I'm glad she gave a little insight into some song lyrics and who some songs were about. And she confirmed that she writes beyond most particular relationships in favor of more universal appeal.

People are complaining about her focus on petty stories over what they wanted to know. I was only appalled that she spent paragraphs and pages complaining about her unkempt hair issues. I thought girl couldn't you try to comb your own nest? And it is hard to believe she was waiting to be fed, even when rich. Her lack of agency even in her self preservation is scary. But she's been through a whole lot. The confrontation with her mom was harrowing. Explains a lot and they did a good job demonstrating how complicated it is to distance yourself from your own family even while supporting them. She has that in common with Oprah, Tyler and many others.

Maybe this is where she is now, addressing and releasing the anger and fear. Perhaps she will do another real tea filled memoir late in her career, like Barbara Walters.

Spoiler alert: she did leave one big little bomb that must have been deliberate, but very weird. An Easter egg? In the Tommy saga, when she described the dinner party, she referenced the guests as "industry illuminati". That's a real weird choice of words. She didn't say luminaries, or illustrious what nots, lol. I actually laughed. I love a good conspiracy theory.

Yeah Todd, Mimi started the Divas chapter with Aretha, her tip top fave as she noted. Let her have her fan girl moment, it happened, those are her thoughts and it certainly doesn't make her racist as some people posted. That's absurd IMO.

Bill, my last thing on this and probably the last word from Celine and that night. Here is Celine talking about that moment and singing with the queen. That's probably how she and Mimi would talk about it together if they were reminiscing.

Re: Trash (96,058) (96,062) by RibbonB from USA
I know it well, the testimony part of the song. The event and the finale was legendary and it's cool Mariah told her perspective. I just posted Carole King and Randy Jackson talking about the moment. I don't even think Mimi was dissing Celine, although I was. She just gave her take on it. Aretha is very important to Mariah and she has said that many times, which is why the stories about their moments are important to her and in her memoir. All the divas know and love Aretha, but they know she will be a little shady about her "queendom". Gladys Knight, Patti, loves her, but know that about her and have stories about her on video. I think Mimi was praising Aretha more than trying to diss Celine. She didn't even say her name. Lol.

Here's a fun retelling of that moment (pro Celine) from Carole King and Randy Jackson.

Re: Trash (96,043) (96,048) by RibbonB from USA
Lol I had to go back and re read the couple of paragraphs on Divas Live. Mimi is obviously an Aretha fan and has just as much of a right to her opinion on that performance, as anyone else. It certainly tracks with the great old NY Times review of that event. And we've discussed divas live many times on this board and many agree that Celine sounded like a wounded cat trying to sing along with Aretha, but you know opinions we've all got them. But whatever her opinion, it isn't a lie, it just doesn't match yours and apparently a few others.

Re: Swan song (96,026) (96,031) by RibbonB from USA
Mariah maintained a close relationship with the nephews because Pat had custody of them. Interviews exist of Allison complaining about them taking Michael. Pat probably raised Shawn and since Mimi bought her a house she had access to the older boys. It seems Mimi tried to have a relationship with the mom but after years of disappointment, she let go, at least she vows to always take care of her. I'm glad she didn't waste her book on the many pieces of crap like clown, why open herself up to their virulent verbal abuse again?

Article: The Thought Leaders Issue: Mariah Carey (96,017) by RibbonB from USA
Mariah is brilliant here. She so clearly articulates her memoir's emphasis on race. I'm so happy she got that off her chest.

Re: The memoir (95,935) (95,946) by RibbonB from USA
I'm just getting time to crack it open this weekend. I wasn't expecting much on self reflection, but I'm pissed she was so stingy on the picture sharing. Not even a good selection of Dem Babies. Pics. She could've at least given us some good new shots, or old exclusive never before seen shots of herself. The old personal family photos are nice I guess. With respect to the racial stuff, Michaela said in some article that Mimi had strong feelings about it and insisted that they be put in the book. I will likely breeze through this text by Sunday.

Check out the LA Times review that Michaels Angela Davis RT'd. It gives it high marks Burnett seems fair in mentioning it's shortcomings. She doesn't talk about her bipolar stuff, or lot of the things people have been salivating to know and supposedly takes no blame in anything, lol. I'm glad she was honest about her mom, I always wondered where she was while her kids were falling apart.
