Re: Fave live performances (97,919) (97,923) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Nice topic. You had quite alot of performances in the top 5, but I think I will list only five live performances, if that's ok.

1. Make it Happen - Live at Madison Square Garden
2. We Belong Together - Live 8
3. Anytime You Need a Friend - Tokyo Dome 1996
4. Honey - Butterfly World Tour Hawaii
5. I'll be Lovin' U Long Time - MTV Video vanguard award Japan

Mariah "Care One Child" (97,666) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I know it's not Christmas for a long time, but I find myself listening to this song every season of the year. But I wanted to consult you fellow lambs, since we have talked about a lot Mariah's tendency to lip synch.

I want to believe that this whole performance is live, because she was pregnant, and her voice was on point at that time. But how much of this performance was live, did she actually sing the high notes live? I like to think so. Either way, I think it's one of her best live performances and the song always gives be goose bumps.

Re: Bey gets her 28th Grammy (97,582) (97,584) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
The mainstream music media hates Mariah, let's be real. Beyoncé with 30 Grammy awards, Mariah with 5? I do think Whitney Houston has about seven, Celine Dion 5 and Madonna 6. And Beyoncé 30. The Grammy's are as delusionized as the Rolling Stone magazine. I just watched a YouTube clip made by the Rolling Stone where they placed the 10 greatest Super Bowl performances, Mariah wasn't even on the list. Mariah has never earned the respect from critics and will never do. Mariah is a people person, and always will be.

Tommy Mottola, a monster? (97,554) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I'm not a big user of instagram, but lately I have started to follow a few of the Mariah fanprofiles. Sometimes there is a picture of Mariah and Tommy together, and the comments are almost vicious consedring Tommy. It seems like most Mariah fans think of him as a monster, like a modern Beauty and the Beast tale.

I know Mariah might have suffered some psychological trauma because of that marriage, but I have also always thought of it as a bit of an exaggeration, you know, people have experienced real trauma without having the possibility to write music, express themselves, perform and earning a sh*t loads of money. I don't downplay Mariah's own experience, but face it, she was still privileged.

I wonder what had happened to Mariah's career if she wasn't supervised or controlled by Tommy. Would she have started wearing skimpy clothes from the beginning? Would she have partied and not taken care of her voice early on, and maybe her vocal decline would have started after her very first record? Would there have ever been the masterpiece that we all consider the Tokyo Dome concerts to be?

I'm conflicted when it comes to Tommy. I believe Mariah felt hostage, and that is not forgivable. But would Mariah have had the high points in her career without Tommy? In many ways I'm grateful that Tommy had such a firm hand on her career, because if he hadn't, I don't think there would have been any Music Box, Merry Christmas, Daydream or even Butterfly, all albums every Mariah fans think is her golden age of her career. I don't think Mariah would have been the superstar and legend she is today without him.

I can't remember if this has been a topic on this site many times or not, just wanted to share my thoughts while I'm watching old school Mariah performances from the early 90's.

Re: Songs Mariah never lip synchs (97,401) (97,402) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Hmm... as a fan, I'm embarrased I have never seen that rendition. But give me this, Andrew, she rearly lips Hero. The parts that are lipped in that clip I belieive she has lowered in later renditions.

But what about when Mariah joins other superstars on Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Cealed, Delivered" the same night, Andrew, when she hits that high note that leaves Beyoncé baffled, is that also lipped? Please say no, Andrew, because that note has given me pleasure for over a decade.

Songs Mariah never lip synchs (97,400) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
There are two songs Mariah never lip synchs, Vision of Love and Hero. She can sing those songs without lip synching and they still sound nice, and the performances are usually pretty emotional and the audience usually respond very positivley. Why can't Mariah arrange her other songs in that way that she can actually sing them live? It's much more satisfactory to hear Mariah sing a song completly live. A partly lip synched song always seems a little fake.

Re: WBT Valentine's mix (97,398) (97,399) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I completly agree with you, Andrew. But it's not just the case with WBT, she hasn't belted the high notes live since 1998. Has anybody here heard Heartbreaker hight notes live ever? What about TTR? All the high notes of the Charmbracelet songs where lipped during the Charmbracelet World Tour. I actually can't remember a live performance after 1999 where the hight notes aren't lip synched. Strangley, during the E=MC era, she actually sang the high notes on TMB and IBLYLT live on several occasions, and that was during a time her voice almost sounded damaged. How come Mariah is capable of reaching the high notes in the studio? Can somebody please explain this to me?

Is AIWFCIY the most successful song in history? (96,577) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I just had this crazy thought. I had to listen to AIWFCIY for the first time this season, and it came down to me, Mariah might have created the masterpiece of our century or millennium.

I have often felt sad that women like Celine, Whitney, Madonna, Aretha, Janet and even Ariana have hade grater success than Mariah on an international term. All have hade greater hits or greater sales. They all have discographies that are greater than Mariah.

But listen, in all charts comparing the greatest female artists, Mariah is always there, always making an impact, you can't talk about great female artists leaving out Mariah.

But here it comes, with AIWFCIY, Mariah has created a song that is for the decades to come, so great in music history, it doesn't even bury all other legacy's, but it almost bury Mariah's legacy, becoming the greatest song ever produced.

My local coffee shop (96,419) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I thnik there might be a Mariah fan working at my local coffee shop. Mariah is not often played here in Norway, you can hear her on slow jam radio channels, where LTT, WYB, IBT and Hero being played. But at this coffee shop I have heard ABMB, Without You, and now lastly, A No No.

I have to find this person and befriend him/her.

The future is not looking good (96,302) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I was a bit devastated to se how low The Rarities charted, and it seems like Mariah is not capable of selling new music anymore, or make an impact at all. There are other legendary artists who can just put an album out and it goes to #1 just because of their reputation. I think Mariah's reputation is to blame. She is now just looked at as the Queen of Christmas, and it seems like her catalogue is getting forgotten. And the only reason people listen to AIWFCIY and her other Christmas songs is because they love the songs, not the artist behind them. After Christmas most people don't care about Mariah anymore, and they get back to thinking of her as an overly sexualized demanding difficult diva.

I think the biggest sign of her fading legacy is Mariah not being able to sell tickets to her tours and live shows. Her tour has an attendance of 2-3000 per show, that is almost ridiculous compared to other greats like Celina Dion, Madonna, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Pink etc.

I read somewhere that Katy Perry is today's Mariah Carey, having plenty of hits and millions of albums sold, but haven't managed the cultural impact of other big artist, and have lost respect in the general public, thus fading away slowly until one day there is no more.

It's a terrifying thought that Mariah's music, besides AIWFCIY, is going to be forgotten, just because of Mariah's image and persona. I don't mind Mariah being a diva, but I do believe what made people lose respect is her image from Rainbow and onwards. Mariah became all about them boobs, she wanted to flash them as often as possible, and when people get the notion that you care more about looking sexy, cheesy sexy that is, they lose interest.

I sometimes think about what if Mariah died today, God forbid she did, would that make a cultural inpact as when Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Prince? Would her albums and singles sell so much that they recharted?

I know, you shouldn't think about this stuff, but I do. I'm worried Mariah's legacy is slowly slipping away, because you never sse her albums on iTunes 200 albums charts like so many of other legendary artist, and you won't find her on iTunes top 100 rnb songs like many of Whitney Houston's songs or Tina Turner or Alicia Keys.

Mariah has given me so much pleasure during my lifetime, I absolutely love her back catalogue, I listen to her every day, she has so many great songs and her talent is, or was, out of this world. I worry about her future, because I want young people to discover her music, experience the feelings I have had. My worst fear is she is fading away, everything fades away.

Have to listen to Always Be My Baby now.

Re: Swan song (96,026) (96,063) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
This is very dramatic, Randy, but I hope you will still be a part of this community. I have many times wondered if my love for Mariah borders to obsession, I think of her and her career more often than I would like. I find myself thinking of Mariah before I go to sleep, and sometimes I wake up to think about Mariah. I think I'm the only person I know that spend this much time thinking about the music star I adore.

My point is, maybe you have had a bit of an unhealthy relationship with Mariah, it seems like you have invested so much, and now you feel let down. But remember, Mariah is almost a fictional person, a woman most of us in this board have adored throughout our lives, but how many of us actually know her? Nobody.

I think you have to let go of the notion Mariah Carey, and more think of her as a person you never knew. Keep on adoring her 90's persona, I sure do the same, and I also wish for some brief moments that she will yet again turn into Daydream-Mariah. But she will never do.

I beg you Randy, rethink what you have decided, because I think it is rooted in too much investment in a person that never have known you, but you have always thought you have known them. It's hurtful, but it is the truth.

I sure will keep on routing for Mariah, even though I also miss the 90's unflawless Mariah. Hey, don't we all mussing being young?

The Rarities (95,985) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
The Rarities is actually the best album Mariah has released in years. I was a bit doubtful before this project with her memoires and an album, but Mariah proved me wrong. Haven't read the book yet, waiting for it to arrive, but I have listened to The Rarities non stop, and I absolutely love the album. When Mariah join forces with every Mariah there is, it's just overwhelming, it's so good you just couldn't imagine.

Oh, how lovely it is to be a lamb these days, it just don't ever end.

Out Here On My Own (95,618) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I got goosebumps the first time I heard it. What a beautiful cover. It is so wonderful to listen to how Mariah's voice was 20 years ago. I became a fan when she released the Butterfly album, and my love for Mariah increased wirh #1's, Rainbow and Glitter, hey, when she released Glitter I felt I was the only fan in Norway. So the tone and quality of her voice on OHOMO is the tone I fell in love with. I actually felt a bit sad when I listened to it the first time, because Mariah's voice is so much richer and she can hit high notes she just can't hit nowadays, and Mariah's present voice is so nasal compared to 2000. Oh well, I going to enjoy this song for quite some time, I think it's a new favourite.

Not too much to say about the video. I thought she was going to be overly sexy, but I'm happily surprised that she wasn't, and I loved the curly hair

The love for Mariah (95,505) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I like most female singers who can really sing, Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Christina, Barbra, Patti, Aretha etc., but I also love female artist that hasn't got that huge voice like Madonna, Britney, Katy Perry and Rihanna.

But when I read comments on Facebook and YouTube and such, I understand there is a huge competition among those artists based on their fans. Fans argue all the time about who is the ultimate queen. What I have realised tonight is that all those arguments affect me, because I always want my Mariah on top.

Well, the reality is that Mariah is far from being on top these days. Her music doesn't make any impact and she sells very few tickets to her live shows. Those are the basic arguments from rivaling fans who wants to put Mariah down. I can't argue against them, because it's true.

What I have also realised this evening, is that whatever other people say about Mariah, my feeling towards her remains the same. There is nothing people could say that can distance me from Mariah, because music and the artist is about the feelings you experience while listening to them, and the feeling I get while listening to Mariah is always positive. Mariah is my go to artist at all times. I'm so much in love with the music and person, that I will never stop routing for her. Mariah has been my number one inspiration in music, I have invested so much time supporting her, that not a single argument will change my stand that Mariah is the best female singer in the world.

Love you Mariah.

Mariah performing at the US Open? (95,501) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Mariah latest Facebook story is very cryptic, but it looks like she will perform at the women's final. I am a total tennis buff and have watched lots of the matches at this years US Open, and will be watching the final. It would be so much fun to see Mariah there.

New insta story (95,437) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Did you guys notice how good Mariah looked in her latest insta story? She wanted people to vote, but all I could see was how skinny she is, I think Mariah has lost som weight. I'm bipolar myself and always gain weight then lose it again, it is the medication to blame, and I think it is the same case with Mariah. Too bad she isn't doing any performances in the coming future, it would have been great to see her lean figure on stage again.

Re: Mariah's writing style, vocabulary and personal (95,232) (95,234) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I think this abused narative is getting a little bit over hand. How abused was Mariah, really? Yes, they told her which clothes wear and she didn't have complete control over her music. But she still wrote the lyrics, didn't she, and whatever producer she had made the songs to what they are.

But compared to other abusive relationships, how bad was it for Mariah? She turned into a wealthy woman, singing to thousands of adoring fans, had the opportunity to express her self through music.

The Mariah almost all of us feel nostalgic about is from the years she was with Mottola. Her prime was during this time, and we all miss it. Wasn't Mottola's influence on Mariah positive at all? When Mariah split with Mottola she released maybe her best work with Butterfly. But her voice? What happened to that?

With Rainbow Mariah was ridiculed because she cheapened her look, her reputation went to the dogs. With Glitter it seamed like Mariah really just wanted to be a porn star. Voice second, boobs first. What happened to her reputation? She became the laughing stock of the world. This was all Mariah.

Mariah redeemed her self with TEOM, and that is because she became decent again. I don't think the world forgot about the troubling years around 2000, and I think many people still considers Mariah to be more into being sexy than have a great singing voice.

My point is, even though "rules" were strict during Mariah's marriage to Tommy, it is the years that turned out to be the baseline that everybody judge Mariah by. In my opinion, that can't be that bad.
