About Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa: Music lover.

Re: Another take on the voice (95,226) (95,228) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
"They might not be at their peak or even popular, but they still have active careers. Roberta Flack is 83 and is still signed to a record label. Aretha didn't sound the same, and nobody was expecting her to, but before she started struggling with pancreatic cancer, she could still sing decently. None of the artist you mentioned have officially retired."

Ok. Mariah has not retired nor does she seem to be retiring soon. I'm not sure what your point was, but all I was saying is that these artists longevity has much more to do with what they did in their peak, not what they did later in their career. Mariah is the same in my opinion.

Re: Another take on the voice (95,218) (95,220) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Idk when I look at Tina, Diana, Patti, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Lionel, Gladys, Al Green, Roberta Flack, and many others I don't see very active careers into their 70s or even into the later parts of their lives. And we all know that the amazing Aretha (RIP) did not sound the same on her final album.

These singers will always be amazing, they had longevity without actively putting out new music on a regular basis into their 70s. I see Mariah as legendary as those that came before her, yet she was a part of a very different music industry climate than they were.

Re: Sadly, criticism is the main order of the day (95,179) (95,186) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I agree with your post completely.

Side note: my brother is considering moving to S.A. within a year, I would love to connect you with him for some info and such if you'd be inclined.

Re: Another take on the voice (95,178) (95,185) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Yes. Love this. And coming from the ballet world, all ballerinas know that longevity is not the goal. I actually left the ballet world so that I could live my life in other ways aside from that intense lifestyle. I have a feeling that Cirque Du Soleil performers are the same. They train for endless hours and have zero life outside of that world, so they do it for awhile then leave it at some point. It seems extremely healthy to me.

Fourth of July (95,161) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I think I'm still holding out, waiting to feel the magic from this song in a real life experience. Like since day one, the feels of this song were so tangible and just slightly less abstract than Underneath The Stars for me (btw I am still and will always be utterly in love with that song as well). Like... every single millisecond of FOJ captured the whole essence of that the story she was telling. Also, I literally see colors when I hear it. Ughhhhhh I want this exact magic irl lol

Re: Caution (95,122) (95,142) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Love it. I was introduced with her debut album. But I feel like I could have become a fan by being introduced by several of her albums. Daydream and Butterfly would have definitely done it for me.

What I'm excited for (95,131) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I am super excited for The Rarities. I think I'm most excited because each era of hers mirrored whatever what was going on in my life at that time. So I think it's going to be so fun revisiting these eras and have them all in one collection. Like, missing moments from each of those eras. I can't wait to see the songwriting.

Re: Andrew (95,104) (95,128) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I mean... many people disagree on here. It's the delivery and the way it's communicated that's disrespectful. I've watched many vocal experts analyze her vocals and they can critique without trashing her.

Randy, you often talk about "delusional fans" but delusion disorder is real. And it is a mental illness. As casually as that term is thrown around in here, I'm surprised that you all are upset about what was said.

I love a disagreement, debating is always fun. But when it has been lowered to pettiness, I think that's the turnoff for most people.
But I have definitely learned to just skip the one or 2 people's posts that I typically don't enjoy.

Side note, I am a huge Prince fan and I remember his following being very divided where some people just stayed with 80s Prince and many of the rest of us just learned his new ways of creating music and I think it's actually nice to grow with an artist as they evolve. Same with Joni Mitchell, I love her old voice and how it sounds in her later works.

Caution (95,084) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I was laying out by the lake the other day, streaming the Caution album. I had a thought... if Caution was the debut album by Mariah I would be an instant fan. Like, it is so slick and good and addictive. If she was a new artist coming out with Caution, she would be a water oasis in the midst of a musical desert.

What other albums do you all think would make you fall for her if it were her first album? (I hope my wording is clear.)

Save The Day (95,083) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
So catchy. "If he won't, then she won't and they won't..." I love it. Needed this, the production and sample makes this sound like a familiar classic. So much more about the vibe than the acrobatics, it's such a bop for me. Hope you all are enjoying the single.

Be Nice or Leave (95,082) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
This is not a difficult concept at all. Any decent person can easily adhere to this. There are many ways to disagree without being nasty or toxic. Let's respect the space by respecting their main rule.

I am loving this era for Mariah. Caution was a real gem and it has definitely refreshed her as an artist. I am so excited for the rest of this year to roll out.

The Honest Vocal Coach GMA vid (94,995) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Yessss. I love The Honest Vocal Coach I've been watching her forever. Her name is fitting, because she is always honest. Watching her cover the GMA performances was so fun. Gave me chills all over again. So great to see others that can appreciate how her voice has aged.
Check it out here.

Re: GMA (94,978) (94,994) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
My previous post was solely on her interview. I loved her energy and even vulnerability in it.

I hadn't seen the performance yet when I posted that. I loved the performance as well. It was beautiful, I loved the piano, and it seems like she is singing into the song, not singing outwardly trying to show the world something. She loves her catalogue and it shows. She so deserves this moment

Re: The Rarities (94,972) (94,989) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
That's interesting. When I look up the word, this is the first thing that pops up, from Oxford Languages dictionary:
rar·i·ty /ˈrerədē/
noun
the state or quality of being rare.
Similar:
uncommonness
singularity
uniqueness
scarcity
scarceness
sparseness
a rare thing, especially one having particular value.
plural noun: rarities
Similar: collector's item
Seems very fitting to me.

GMA (94,978) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Beautiful, healthy, calm. She looked amazing and she looked so comfortable. This is the energy I love to see her in. Being at home and working on these projects has grounded her so much and I love to see it. I hope for many more moments of confident Mariah like this one.

Mariah & Santa: A true story (94,959) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
When I was 10 years old, Mariah released Emotions. I had been in love with her voice and her lyrics since I was 9 and heard Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, and Someday (this one I loved soooo much, I'll never get the image of her in those jeans out of my head).

So here we are, Christmastime '91 and I really really wanted the Emotions tape for Christmas. I was a smart kid that asked a lot of questions, so the Santa Claus myth was debunked years ago for me. So I had already made my Christmas list and it was full, each of us kids only had a certain amount of things we could put on our lists. Also, I was worried that the album would be considered too adult-oriented for me at that age. So I never told not even 1 person that I wanted Emotions, not a soul.

So it's the holidays and my older sister at the last minute decides to take me with her to her job's holiday party. It was a last minute decision and they let me know I was going just an hour before the party. I get there and they are handing out gifts to each of the kids. So sweet. And of course, with my luck I got the smallest gift. But I didn't feel so bad when I considered that they really didn't know I was coming probably. So I opened this small rectangular gift... and I literally could have died. I was speechless. I couldn't even speak or believe my eyes. It was the Emotions cassette. I think I told every single adult at that party how grateful I was, I could not believe that the impossible actually happened. So this made me question so many things, but mainly my disbelief in Santa Claus. No one knew I wanted it, I wasn't even supposed to be at that party, how the heck did this even happen. So for a brief couple of years, Santa became a little more real again.

Oddly enough, after all these years I never made a connection between my Mariah story and her Queen of Christmas identity. This happened before Merry Christmas so I never put the two together until thinking of a title for this post. I guess I could just say, how foreshadowing.

Thanks for reading, I hope some of you get the magic, this is one of my favorite childhood memories.

Ha. I love that. And I totally agree. With all the race issues riled up in the world right now, I think Kaleidoscope, emphasizing a myriad of colors creating beauty, would be a fitting album title for the end of this year.

Re: Name game (94,938) (94,949) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I just need her to go ahead and release these extremely rare (yet to be written or recorded) tracks:

- Quietly
- Kaleidescope (title track off of her next album)
- Zero F****

Re: Name game (94,935) (94,938) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Fun fact. There are only 3 letters in the alphabet that Mariah doesn't have a song title starting with.

Re: Charmbracelet (94,789) (94,794) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I might be alone but I've always heard Lullaby as a sequel to The Roof. It carries the same nostalgia for me. I feel like it would be just as out of place on the charts as The Roof was when it was released.

Re: Charmbracelet (94,760) (94,772) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Love this question and it's definitely hard. But here's what I'm feeling today, in order:

1st - Yours
This was just after Glitter. That era was sparkly, glossy, shiny... glittery. This as a first single would showcase her voice first, in a smooth and clean and clear production style.

2 - Lullaby
I love this song so much. I feel like it's so relatable and it crosses genres. It doesn't sound like anything else from that time and the beginning notes are reminiscent of MJ in the 80s. A slick video could have set this off to show a more mysterious, "shady lady" side of Mariah. Again, offsetting the shine and glimmery pop image of Glitter.

3 - BOTH
This was a smart single. Many people have said this is the only song on the album they liked. With many lambs and fans left unsure after her previous era, this is a familiar song, great rendition, strong single in general.

4 - Through The Rain remix with Kelly and Joe
This remix is so much better to listen to than the original. The original is an art piece, but it's too heavy to consume imo. The lyrics are so great and I feel like the remix showcases them more. It tells a story and it makes you feel good. It doesn't sound like a ballad. This would have been a great final single for the album.

Honorables

I love Boy (I need you) but the video was not supportive of the song imo. Maybe it would have performed better if it was given a whole different context and image.

I also love Clown and had Glitter been successful (as it really should have been) then the purpose of Charmbracelet wouldn't have been to make safe choices in order to reassure fans that she's still got it together. If this was the case, Clown would have been a great edgy but beautiful, pretty but shady song to release. The controversy would have sent it up the charts and again, a great video (I picture WBT shower scene and satin sheets Mariah for it, and Bianca?) would have just set it off. Just for laughs.

If this was a different world, Subtle Invitation would be a single and smash the adult contemporary world sending lounge jazz singers around the world to add it to their live sets. This is one I've my favorite songs on the album.
