The first single from the album "The emancipation of Mimi" was "It's
like that", which Mariah wrote together with Jermaine Dupri. Mariah
about the song: "It's like that is a song that to me is just very much
like, it's all about having a good time, and really just a fun, party
record. I went to Atlanta and I was working with Jermaine Dupri.
We wrote 'Always be my baby' together and we've been friends for a
really long time. He's just a great person and a great, great producer
and writer. I just wanted a record that was really fun, really like for
the clubs and just for the people who were getting ready to go out at
night; one of those really let-your-hair-down, just have a good time,
this is my night type of thing, like this is my song when I go out to have
a good time. And that's how we came up with the song 'It's like that',
we were just having fun."
Billboard wrote about the single: "After years of underwhelming
singles, Mariah Carey finally returns with a certifiably hot track. 'It's
like that' is a sparse, bass-heavy, beat-driven cut that is primed for
radio and dancefloors. For too long now, Carey's vocals have shifted
between breathy near-mumbles ('Boy (I need you)') and overwrought
multilayered wails ('Through the rain'). With 'It's like that', she goes
back to basics. With a mostly straight-ahead delivery, Carey reminds
us why we fell for her pipes in the first place. Granted, the selling point
of the track here is the beat and its 'let's party' message. Still, we'll
take it. The single ends on just the right note: a roof-raising call-andresponse
chant (Let's go now, what?!)."
The song debuted on the Billboard charts in January 2005,
months before the release of the album "The emancipation of
Mimi". Although it was never released as a single in the USA, it still
managed to reach No. 16.
The video for "It's like that" was shot at the same time as the video
for the second single, "We belong together". Both were shot in Los
Angeles by director Brett Ratner ("Rush hour", "Red dragon"), who last
worked with Mariah in 1999 on her "Heartbreaker" clip. "It's like that" has
a Vegas casino story line, while in "We belong together" Mariah races
to the altar in her very own wedding dress, a Vera Wang number she
wore back in 1993 when she married Tommy Mottola. The videos
feature cameos by Jermaine Dupri, Eric Roberts and Jay-Z, among
others.
