Mariah Carey refuses to acknowledge turning 43

What's so bad about turning 43 when you look as good as this? A heck of a lot if you are Mariah Carey, apparently, as the diva of diva steadfastly refused to acknowledge her big day on Wednesday's American Idol live show. The Touch My Body singer willfully dodged discussing her special day - talking over a contestant who wished her "happy birthday" and later blanking Ryan Seacrest as he attempted to congratulate her.

Looking stunning in a crossover red dress, the same colour as Nicki Minaj's outfit, Mariah seemed a little out of sorts ,and hinted that she may feel repressed by the "powers that be" on the show. Kree Harrison, 22, had just sung a duet with her fellow Idol wannabe Janelle Arthur.

"Mmmmm, Ok, I don't even know if there's enough time for me to really pick this apart because the powers that be love to cut me off when I get to talking," she complained, before commending the girls on their "sisterhood" during the song. After the Glitter actress had praised the contestants further Kree piped up with: "Happy Birthday from us by the way," but Mariah refused to acknowledge the comment and talked over the orphaned Nashville resident.

"You do it well but, what I was going to say is, there's always that little bit of Janelle fire, and Kree there is always that star power in you, there's a quality and we hear it, feel it, the both of you were very, very good," she rambled, as if trying to change the subject.

Later in the night host Ryan Seacrest attempted to coax the Butterfly megastar further - but multi-platinum Mariah refused to accede the "B-word". Instead she waved a plastic princess wand that she had inexplicably brought with her to the judging panel. "Is that your anniversary wand?" cajoled Seacrest, but Mariah wasn't biting, preferring to keep the attention on the music of the night.
