Mariah's diva demands

Troubled star Mariah Carey won't be inflicting any more outrageous demands on her record firm Virgin since splitting with them. Virgin executives last dealt with the Glitter singer when she made an appearance on British TV show GMTV, and stunned TV chiefs by turning up with a furniture van. In it was a sofa Mariah insisted should be placed in her dressing room.

Mariah's other diva demands included bringing along her personal chef, who expertly cooked her some toast, and hiring an assistant to hold the gum she had been chewing while she performed. Since splitting with Virgin, Mariah has also checked herself in to desert retreat. She is staying at the US$4,550-a-week We Care Centre near Palm Springs, California, which offers help with stress and fatigue-related problems.

Mariah, 31, who was hospitalized last year after suffering a breakdown, is expected to receive US$26 million after splitting with her record label. An onlooker at the retreat says, "Some people who come here look terrible, but she looked fine."
