Jussie Smollett and Mariah Carey only announced their upcoming concert this week, but preparations are already underway. "This is the biggest thing I have ever done. So it's got to be on point," Jussie tells Wetpaint. "We're just working hard."
The Empire star is working so hard, he's flown to Los Angeles to start production with his creative team for the three-night Honolulu, Hawaii event beginning November 25. After filming an episode of Empire with Mimi (airing next week) and now prepping to share a stage with her, the next question is whether the co-stars will record music anytime soon.
"I would love to," the 33-year-old admits. "We just have to talk to Mariah." But Mimi isn't the only A-lister Jussie has teamed up with on his Fox hit. On tonight's September 28 episode "Sin That Amends" he shares the screen with Taye Diggs, who's playing NYC councilman Angelo Dubois.
The singer hints the episode will deal with Jamal coming to terms with his PTSD through a benefit with the politician for gun violence awareness. "He finally admits in this episode that he really does have a problem," the Smollett Eats star explains of his character. "We get to see he's tapping into sensitivity and awareness of what's really going on in the world."
It sounds like the already socially-conscious Jamal will get even more woke, like big bro Andre Lyon is expected to become. "You'll see in this episode that he really is the opening of his eyes," Jussie adds. "This season is really about the Lyon brothers opening up their eyes to the reality of what is out there."
