Mariah's "Glitter" gleams with style

One of the things I like the most about Mariah Carey is that she reminds me of Minnie Ripperton. She is Minnie Ripperton's legacy, so to speak. It's not just the eight-octave range, although that's a lot of it. It's the innocent-yet sexy singing style that she shares with Ripperton. Here's a free piece of in-the-know music expert advice, get Minnie Ripperton's Perfect Angel album (yes, it has "Lovin' You" on it). You'll be a better person for it, because your appreciation of the late, great R&B artist won't be limited to a Burger King commercial.
Other things I like about Mariah Carey is that she's never, ever boring, her songs are tight, she's not afraid to let funny rappers spit silly verses all over her songs while she sings back-up and I find myself being slightly titillated when I watch her videos. (Oops! Delete, delete, delete). Glitter is no exception. It unapologetically benefits from all of the wonderful Mariah Carey elements including my favorite: style for the sake of style. In the case of Glitter, the styles are '80s dance pop and pop soul. You see, Glitter is the soundtrack from the movie of the same name. It stars Carey as an up-and-coming singer in the '80s with a dream to be a star. This was the perfect opportunity for producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to get their dusty Roland 808s (the drum machine of the '80s) out of the closet and put this joint together in the old school way. It includes a cover of Robert Palmer's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and Indeep's "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". References to the '80s on other tracks range from subtle ("Loverboy") to blatant ("Want You").
With Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the project, the '80s -style material on Glitter is for real. Since Jam and Lewis were at one time arguably the living, breathing embodiment of '80s dance music, these guys aren't just trying to ape a style, they're literally turning back the clock. It's a great backdrop for Carey, which makes one wonder if she wasn't possibly born ten years too late in the first place. It's also interesting to hear Jam and Lewis revisit what they were doing in the '80s with almost twenty years of added experience and hindsight.
So see, everybody, it's not impossible for a jaded, bitter, crusty, burned-out (wait a minute, let me get my thesaurus out) jaundiced, over stimulated music critic like me to enjoy something that's destined to be as popular as cargo pants. Shoot, if I can enjoy Glitter, you'll probably really like it!
