Mariah "Lovergirl" Carey

The Mariah Carey of 1990 and the Mariah Carey of 2001 is the same person of course, but with some adjustments. The difference between the two is a box of hair dye, a tube top, a hair stylist, and a hot new song called "Loverboy". As described by MTV, "Loverboy" is an "uptempo party track that alternates a bouncing funky bass with rock guitars." That it does - and when you throw in guest appearances by rappers Da Brat, 22, Ludacris and Shawna, you get an instant number one.

So perhaps "Loverboy" will be Mariah's sixteenth chart topper? Maybe so. No, let's rephrase that - undoubtedly so. Radio stations were so eager to play the tune that they started it out on heavy rotation Friday afternoon - a week before it was scheduled to hit airwaves.

The same thing occurred in 1995 when Mariah's single "Fantasy" had to be pressed weeks earlier to meet the public demand. In fact, there wasn't even time for a photo shoot for the cover - so they had to use the slated cover for "Daydream," the LP in which "Fantasy" was released from. In that case, "Fantasy" debuted at Number One and held the spot for eight weeks. Miss Carey just may live that moment over when the commercial single for "Loverboy" is released on July 17.

That was six years ago, though - does this diva still call all the shots on the charts? Well since then, Mariah racked up five more number one hits and earned the title of "Artist of the Millenium" on her way there. But it's not all candy and cream. Mariah may have some steep competition. With upcoming single releases from Janet Jackson, Destiny's Child and N'Sync, it may be a toughie for Mariah. But we think she will manage, especially with the help from her fans, who made world news last June when they got Mariah's "Can't Take That Away" EP released by petitioning Mariah's record label. "Loverboy" is the lead single from the "Glitter" soundtrack album, due in stores August 21.
