Cedric is man of the house for American Music Awards

Hosting the 33rd Annual American Music Awards Tuesday night certainly comes with its share of perks, and host Cedric the Entertainer is sure to exploit a few. Don't be surprised if the comedian uses the awards to:

- Promote his "The Honeymooners" DVD that will be released the same day of the awards.

- Talk up the DVD release of one of his other 2005 movies, "Madagascar".

- Use it to get closer to Mariah Carey.

In an interview last week, the Berkeley native, recently honored by the St. Louis Film Festival for career achievement, talked about his infatuation with Carey, what's really going on in R. Kelly's closet, those "lady lumps" and more.

Q: The "American Music Awards" promos are touting a duel between Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani and Kelly Clarkson. Who wins that one in your opinion?

A: I saw this new video with Mariah. I like that she can sing, but with this new video she was really looking good. Then I would go with Gwen, then Kelly. Gwen will battle Mariah. They'll go neck and neck. It'll really depend on what outfit Mariah shows up in.

Q: Which performances are you looking forward to?

A: I know the Rolling Stones will be hot. They like to have fun on stage. I expect a good performance out of the Black Eyed Peas with "my humps, my humps (my lovely lady lumps)". They're usually pretty exciting. I don't know if they got (rapper) Mike Jones on the show, but that'd be my choice, to bring him on. When he smiles, there's like 15,000 diamonds in his mouth. That alone is excitement, any time you have to gargle with jewelry cleaner.

Q: Who are you looking forward to meeting for the first time?

A: I've had great opportunities to meet some of these people before and hang out with them. But Mariah would be nice. I'd have to tell her how I feel about the video and see if she feels me on any level. I met her briefly at an awards show before, but this time I'll go ahead and put it on her. I'll have all my own DVDs with me, plus "Madagascar" and "The Honeymooners", two handfuls.

Q: Any acts you'll stay away from, that you won't touch?

A: No one will be exempt. I'm going to have a good time and try to go at most of them. At the same time, I'm a big fan. But I don't think you can talk about the Rolling Stones too much. They're so old. I don't think the Stones are rolling as much as they used to. But I don't know if you can mess with country stars. Toby Keith, that dude looks like he can fight. One thing you don't want to mess with is a white country boy. They don't know when to stop.

Q: Do you stay away from R. Kelly?

A: He's been trapped in the closet for so long he can only write "Trapped in the Closet" songs. He's shopping in that man's closet. He's going to walk out with all types of sweaters and jackets.

Q: This is the first show without Dick Clark in attendance. What will that be like?

A: He's still recuperating, though he's a lot better. But I imagine they're trying to keep him out of the public. He's one of the key reasons why the American Music Awards are as successful as they are, why they're respected so much, and why you get the bigger stars there. The stars will still want to show their respect, so his overall presence will be there.

Q: What was your favorite album and song of 2005?

A: This will probably never get nominated, but Damien Marley. I've been digging that. I like the Black Eyed Peas stuff, and Mariah Carey is always worthy. You gotta give her some love. She came back. I listened to a lot of hip-hop, which doesn't always get that kind of love. I don't think you'll be hearing (D4L's) "Laffy Taffy".
