Singular Shefft

Jen Schefft
Some people are simply famous for being single. There's Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey ... and, of course, Jen Schefft. She famously received a 3-carat Harry Winston ring from Andrew Firestone on "The Bachelor". But her love affair with the American public proved more lasting. There were two more marriage proposals when Schefft starred in "The Bachelorette", but she walked away. (No chemistry.) Since then, she's been linked to Bill Rancic of "The Apprentice" as well as Chicago nightclub king Billy Dec.

She's not afraid of settling down, Schefft says. Just of settling. So she's written Better Single Than Sorry: A No-Regrets Guide to Loving Yourself and Never Settling (William Morrow, $21.95). Schefft will be signing copies at Borders in Lincoln Park at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and at Anderson's Books in Naperville at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

Now working in public relations in Chicago, Schefft says she's been ridiculed for her decisions. "At only 28, I was labeled a spinster by Star magazine," Schefft writes. "Elisabeth Hasselbeck from 'The View' remarked that I would be 'a bachelorette for the rest of my life'." That's not likely.

"We need to stop wasting time dating men we're not completely into just because it makes life easier," Schefft says. "The truth is, we know what we're looking for and we must never sell ourselves short." Fluff asked Schefft to give some advice to celebrity singles. Who should give love another chance? Who should take some time alone? Are you listening, Britney?

She's had dalliances with Eminem and Derek Jeter, but this diva can't seem to find a strong enough man. Should she just embrace her fabulous singlehood?

Mariah has survived a lot and knows she can take care of herself. I hope she's embracing her singlehood. If a man isn't strong enough to be with her, it's his loss.
