Poor Britney Spears
Poor Britney Spears. Her performance Sunday night opening the MTV Video Music Awards
was unfortunate. On the other end of the entertainment spectrum, there was Roger Federer,
brilliant again at the U.S. Open. At the restaurant where I was dining Sunday night,
they turned up the television so everyone could rate Spears. The reviews from bar
patrons were scathing: lethargic, ill-prepared, unprofessional, out of shape. (And as a
friend later noted: Her body looked fine and she wasn't overweight - but someone who has
had two children should wear more clothing.)
But before we write her off, here's a thoughtful insight from Jay-Z, who talked to "Extra"
before the awards. He said Spears can make a comeback. "Of course! Look at Mariah Carey.
She had one of the hugest comebacks in musical history. So, you can't rule anyone out."
Keep that in mind. The problem is that on Sunday, Britney just dug herself a deeper hole.
Instead of harping on Britney, though, I want to thank the U.S. Open for two weeks of
splendid television that sprawled over USA and CBS. There were so many great matches,
so many television evenings perked up by the sports. A star was born in runner-up Novak
Djokovic, who knows how to ham it up for the camera. Now if he can just convert on his
big opportunities and win crucial points. And Federer added to his legend by prevailing
in the difficult moments. The Open was the best reality series of the summer.
