Interview with Mariah from Capri
Q: Thank you for Mariah for doing this interview with MTV Europe.
M: Thank you.
Q: Now, the new album is called Rainbow. You know the legend goes that if you follow the Rainbow you find a pot of gold at the end of it that all your dreams will come true.
M: And that's what I'm hoping for.
Q: And all your dreams have come true, most of them have. Tell us how Mariah Carey began her journey to find her Rainbow.
M: Well... Let's see... How did I begin my journey to find my Rainbow...? Well, ha, ha... I don't know, I guess it all started when I was a little girl and I wanted to be a singer and... hmm... I started using music as kind of like my saving grace. And... hmm... I just always knew that I wanted to be a singer and I started writing songs when I was like 13 and doing sessions and hmm I was a backup singer and I was a session singer that's a... as like a 13-year-old girl in Long Island for a lot of people and I would hear these songs and I'd be like I'd wanna write this like I'd hear and I'd go "So you really want me to sing this song?" like "Who is gonna like this?" and at that point I sort of felt the desire to wanna write and to wanna be a singer-songwriter and there was a lot of... people were sceptical because like being young, you know, and a girl, they just figured "yeah, right, what are you gonna do?" And then kept doing it and hm trying to develope my stuff and hmm I became a backup singer, moved to the city at 17, worked for Brenda K Starr who was like a big sister to me and helped me out so much and helped me, hmm. She gave my tape to a very big record executive who we all know and love and... hmm, here I am. Ha, ha, ha.
Q: You began singing when you were 4. Do you remember your earliest memory. Have you got any of those... stories. Or can you remember your maybe your favourite song as a child...
M: Hmm... Every song that came on the radio when I was... s... from the time I remember hearing the radio. I would learn and sing along with TV commercials I would sing along like anything I heard. My mother would be singing opera in the house and I would sing along with that.
Q: Tell us about the new single, the latest single. The title, the concept, the lyrics...
M (smiling): The new single is called Heartbreaker and the concept of the song is err... pretty relatable to a lot of girls you know most girls usually like the bad guys you know. This is about a girl who keeps going back to hmm an unhealthy situation with this heartbreaker guy. And, hmm, I actually wrote it here in Capri, I wrote, I started writing it in Mexico and I finished writing it in Capri so it's kind of been a global process and hmm I recorded it here in Capri and... it's one of my favourite things I've done in a while, I also did... so it... so the song features Jay-Z hmm it was a loop that err Dj Clue gave me 'cause he and I are friends and, you know, he had his album out and he was doing a lot more production and stuff and it was just like the minute I heard the loop it's actually from a Stacy Lattisaw record, from like 1981 called "Attack Of The Name Game" and I usually know every old loop but this one, Clue really swung in at home with this one because this was... nobody was thinking about, you know, this loop and hmm, so I wrote the song on top of it and, hmm, err... we called Jay and he came and he did his rhyme like so quick, he didn't even write anything down just of the top of his head just like... came up with the the most with such a clever lyric in like 2 seconds and he's amazing so I was really really happy with the collaboration. And there's also a remix, I don't know if you've heard the remix, but the remix has Missy Elliot and Da Brat and it's to the loop of "Ain't No Fun" by Snoop and it's... really really like one of my favourite things I've done in a long time so we're gonna shoot the remix video for that soon.
