SHAKE IT OFF

In the USA and Australia, the third single off the album "The emancipation of Mimi" was "Shake it off". Just like the previous two singles, in the USA it was only available as digital download. Mariah said about the song: "'Shake it off' is definitely one of my favorite songs from 'The emancipation of Mimi'. It was the first time that I went down to Atlanta to work with JD and it was just like, I don't really know how to explain how the song happened, but Jermaine is just incredible with the beats. And we started singing different melodies, and coming up with different lyrics, and at first Jermaine was singing, 'I gotta get away' and I was like, that's a cool concept and stuff but I feel like we can do something more specific. And we were just sitting around, and 'shake it off' just came out of the blue, like happens when you're writing, and to me it just says so much cause it's like, when you're going through some drama, and you just wanna get through it, you put that song on and it just takes you out of whatever mood you're in."

The song's highest position on Billboard was the second place, where she remained for six weeks. First, the song was held off the first place by "We belong together", later by Kanye West's "Gold digger".

Billboard wrote about this song: "Coming off her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single in five years, Mariah Carey wastes no time in issuing 'Shake it off'. The bouncy midtempo single finds the resuscitated diva dumping her disrespectful, cheating man while name checking Louis Vuitton and Calgon. The tune is straightforward and simple and the sparse thumping beat wisely doesn't distract from Carey's unmistakable vocals. At one point, she simply kisses off her ex with a voice mail: 'Save this recording because I'm never comin' back home, baby I'm gone.' After 'We belong together' brought her back to radio big time, 'Shake it off' will take Carey's good fortune to the next step."

About.com was less positive: "This is the 3rd single from Mariah Carey's #1 hit comeback album 'The emancipation of Mimi'. It is likely to be at least another top 10 pop hit, but is little more than a pleasant piece of pop fluff. There are better choices for singles still lurking on the album. Reportedly, record company brass had already determined that the 3rd single from 'The emancipation of Mimi' would be Mariah Carey's duet with Snoop Dogg on 'Say somethin', one of the best tunes on the entire album. Then Mariah stepped in, put her foot down, and eventually 'Shake it off' became single #3.
While there is nothing offensive in the pleasant piece of pop fluff that is 'Shake it off', it's difficult to make an argument that it's a better radio showcase for Carey's talents than other superior songs on 'The emancipation of Mimi'. 'Shake it off' is a simple tale of the need to break free and move forward at the end of a relationship. It's obvious Mariah Carey is singing about a different world than the one inhabited by most of us as she talks about packing up her diamonds and Louis Vuitton."

In the video, Mariah shakes it off so much so that she's practically nude, twice. Not that we get to see much, of course, but she keeps viewers guessing during the Jake Nava-directed video as she costume-changes her way through a breakup that starts with her in the bath and ends when she drops her robe.

There are many signs on stores and buildings that Mariah passes on the street, including "Jack's Cafe" (reference to Mariah's dog Jack), "Shake It Off", "Pink Yet Lavender" (reference to Mariah's interview with Lambs Radio in January, 2005), "The Rarity" (reference to the E! Uncut special where Mariah's leg muscle was called "the rarity") and "So So Fetch" (reference to JD's label "So So Def" and "fetch" from Mariah's favorite movie "Mean Girls"). Other signs in the video include "Hollyhood" (behind the car) and "Mimi" written in neon lights, like Mariah's famous 2003 Blender Cover. More interpretations point out similarities of various shots to past Mariah videos, such as "Breakdown" (big hair/make up scene), "Fantasy" (little girl dancing), "Vision of love" (microphone Mariah sings into at the end) and more. It seems the video is an homage to some fine moments in Mariah's career.
