Mariah tops Australian poll of most hated Christmas songs
Shoppers fed up with Christmas songs broadcast in malls and department stores have voted Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas the most hated holiday song, it was reported Sunday. One in six Australian shoppers said loudspeakers blaring Christmas songs were the worst part of holiday shopping, Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper reported. A poll of 1,000 shoppers commissioned by Virgin Mobile found one third would rather turn the Christmas songs off.
Other hated songs included Santa Baby, I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus, Away in a Manger, Jingle Bell Rock and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Indulging in its own Christmas promotion, Virgin Mobile stores located in malls are offering headphones playing non-Christmas music for shoppers to escape the musical assault.
Virgin Mobile marketing director David Scribner told the Herald-Sun, "Christmas shopping is supposed to be fun and festive. We've discovered several carols that drive people crazy." (Monsters and Critics)
