Regine Velasquez at the movies
Asia's "Songbird" Ms. Regine Velasquez held a very successful show last night, December 8, at Onstage Greenbelt Mall. The concert series dubbed as "Regine Velasquez at the Movies" has been running since November. Regine sang themes from very popular movies such as "Superman", "Titanic" and a medley of songs from "Moulin Rouge". Her special guest for the evening was actor/singer Gabby Eigenmann. The two sang "Cruisin" from the movie "Duets".
The Songbird paid tribute to her idol Mariah Carey and rendered her version of "Never Too Far" from "Glitter". She admitted although she hasn't seen the movie yet, it's one her favorite songs nowadays. Regine was criticized for copying Mariah's outfits and singing style in her 1999 multi-platinum album R2K. She even had a butterfly tatooed on her back.
Her latest album "Reign" features the new single "To Reach You" which she also sang in the show. Regine admitted that it wasn't a movie theme and that she just wanted to promote her latest release. "Regine Velasquez at the Movies" is presented by Maxi Media and will run until the end of December.
When Regine Velasquez was initially approached to do a concert of songs from the movies, she hesitated. She was worried there wouldn't be enough material for an entire performance. But when she looked at the list of possible titles, she was astonished at the amount of material that was available.
So, the Songbird launches a series of concerts on the movies on Nov. 9 at the Music Museum. She will be at the same venue on Nov. 10, 16, and 17. She moves over to Onstage, Greenbelt on Nov. 23 for the rest of the series. Other shows are on Nov. 24, 30, Dec. 1, 7, 8, 15, and 16. Musical direction is by Raul Mitra.
Entertainment writers immediately teased Regine on her choice of musical directors (Raul is married to sister Cacai). She defended her choice, saying Raul is a competent musical artist, someone she has worked with on past projects, including albums and movies. (www.inq7.com) Many thanks to James C. Ledesma Jr.
