Jussie Smollett hit the wrong note with Mariah Carey

Judging by a new sneak peek tweeted Monday morning by Mariah Carey, the superstar singer's long-awaited upcoming guest spot on Fox's Empire will have fans feeling emotions. In the clip, Carey, playing a singer named Kitty, joins Jamal (Jussie Smollett) in a recording studio. Jamal's nerves seem to get the best of him, as he kicks off the session with a flat note.

"Sorry, this is not my day," he says. Kitty, clad in a bodysuit, responds: "No, it's good," before asking Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) to "get the mood right in the studio" for the young singer.

Along with various members of the Empire cast, Carey recorded the original tune "Infamous" for the soundtrack of the drama's third season. Smollett, a self-proclaimed Carey fan, told EW filming with the pop icon "was great" and that "she's a sweetheart. She's a professional and, you know, this is a long time coming."

Lee Daniels, co-creator of Empire, frequently casts Carey in his projects. Prior to her role on the Fox series, Carey appeared in several of Daniels' feature films, including 2008's Tennessee, which the 56-year-old produced, and two of his directorial efforts: 2009's Precious and 2013's The Butler. Carey also recorded the track "Mesmerized" for Daniels' 2012 movie The Paperboy.
