Mariah Carey roars back

After a year of tragedy and turmoil, superstar Mariah Carey has finally gotten it all together again. And the pop world better watch out. She's got a hot new single set to hit the airwaves next week, a secret new love - and a whole new attitude. "I'm back and there's nothing to stop me now," a confident Mariah's telling friends. "I'm looking forward to life."

That's fabulous news for her fans and those who love her most. Just a year ago, it seemed like her life and career was on the rocks. The tabloids were buzzing about suicide attempts after she cancelled an MTV appearance and was rushed to the hospital suffering from exhaustion. Her movie, "Glitter", and its soundtrack album crashed and burned in the wake of September 11. And her love life was in shambles. Then, to add insult to injury, EMI's Virgin Records sent her packing, saying she was a disappointment.

But Mariah refused to quit. She's fought for her dream since her childhood days on New York's Long Island, where she grew up fast with drug-addicted, prostitute older sister and a party animal big brother. Within months, Mariah inked a mega-million dollar deal with Island/Def Jam Records and settled down to work. "I'm kind of a workaholic. I never learned how to put myself before my career," the 32-year-old beauty confesses. "But now I've learned I have to temper it and do it in a way that's good for me."

Once a fixture on the Manhattan night scene, making the rounds with sexy studs like Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio and Derek Jeter, she's keeping a distinctly lower profile these days, focusing on what's important in her life. After years of estrangement, she made peace with her father, Alfred Carey, who left his family when she was three. Mariah was at his bedside, holding his hand when he died from cancer this summer, friends say. And she's finally gotten over her devastating breakup with Latin singer Luis Miguel, who became her steady a couple of years after she divorced Sony Music CEO Tommy Mottola, the man who made her a star. Word is she's now finding comfort in the arms of rap sensation Eminem. But after a flurry of publicity, the couple is now officially keeping things hush-hush.

Mariah and her new record label are also being coy about her new album, refusing to release the names of the tunes on it. Inside sources however did a bit of sleuth work and uncovered the confirmed title of Mariah's new single. Aply titled, "Through The Rain" will begin to air on radio stations next Monday. Studio execs are being tight-lipped because they don't want a repeat of the incident that Mariah says helped torpedo her "Glitter" album. She contends archrival Jennifer Lopez got a sneak preview of the album - then sampled her sound and came out with a copycat tune that stole Glitter's glitz. J.Lo denies the incident ever occurred.

But there's no denying Mariah's drive and talent. She has had more Number One hits than any female artist has in history. And those who know say, she's just a record away from being right back at the top of the charts with her own label, MonarC Music, distributed through Island/Def Jam Records. According to her mother, Patricia Carey: "Mariah has never stopped writing, she's always planning something. She's a trouper. You can't hold her down. She's had some time to rest, regroup and she's ready to come out fighting. When she says she's coming back, she's already on your doorstep." Looks like this butterfly is finally free.
