Nickelodeon welcomes volunteer champions

Strengthening its Big Help volunteer campaign, Nickelodeon, the No.1 kids network, announced a holiday celebration of kid volunteerism with The Big Holiday Help-a-thon. The sixth-annual event, hosted by Nickelodeon star Kenan Thompson, features Britney Spears and 'NSYNC performing in the "The Big Help Holiday Jam" in Los Angeles, along with a dance party in New York City hosted by Nickelodeon veteran Mike O'Malley. During the dance party, kids will be asked to call in to pledge volunteer hours in their communities and nominate their towns for a visit by Nickelodeon's Big Helpmobile. The Big Holiday Help-a-thon is scheduled to air Saturday, December 11 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Big Help spokesperson Mariah Carey, along with Elton John and Mia Hamm, will be joining the campaign through the "Team Big Help All-Stars," a series of behind-the-scenes looks at how celebrities got involved in volunteer activities and how their personal causes have made an impact.

Additionally, the network will continue to focus the program on local volunteer efforts by making hundreds of visits around the country, including 10 Team Big Help Tour stops to refurbish community parks.

"We have made helping a part of kids' everyday lives by bringing volunteerism right to their neighborhoods. To show kids that they really can make a difference, we visited nearly 100 towns last year and refurbished 10 community parks across the country," says Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Chief of Staff, Nickelodeon. "We strongly believe that if kids get involved in their communities, they will be volunteers for life. So we're encouraging kids - along with their friends and family - to give time to their communities this holiday season."

This year's Help-a-thon events will cover both coasts with the Holiday Jam in Los Angeles on November 22 and the dance party - which will feature the taped concert - live from New York on December 11. These events are a celebration of the past year's Big Help volunteer efforts and a call to action for the year 2000. Joining Spears and 'NSYNC in Los Angeles are A*Teens, My Town and Aaron Carter.

Nickelodeon has also created a special 800 number for parents to call which will explain how to better connect their kids with The Big Help. Additional Big Help information can be found on nick.com.
