Can Mariah's acting career fly?

Now that comeback girl Mariah Carey is getting ready to set off on a world tour in support of her hit "Charmbracelet" album, what are the chances that the butterfly-loving diva's stalled acting career will take wing? There isn't anything in the way of success to build on in that department. Mariah's quasi-autobiographical "Glitter" film - which she also produced and for which she wrote the soundtrack songs - was a megaton bomb and her "Wise Girls" never made it to the big screen.

But - don't count her out of the game, say those who know Mariah best. Two factors remain overwhelmingly in her favor. First, her determination. In the entertainment field, where having abnormally vast reserves of nerve and endurance are job requirments, Mariah has even more monumental reserves than most. After all, this is the woman who, a year and a half after a public, messy breakdown, returned to the limelight with one of her best and most successful albums.

Secondly, Mariah proponents insist that she has acting talent. Though "Wise Girls" never found feature distribution, it - and Mariah's performance - won kudos at the Sundance Festival. And Eric Benet, who costarred with her in "Glitter", is among those who credit her with having acting chops the public has yet to behold.

Right now, there is nothing ahead on Carey's acting slate, but don't be surprised if she decides to test the waters again a showcase cameo or supporting part in someone else's film. That was her plan, after all, five years ago when she first decided to leap into an acting career. Perhaps if she had stayed with that plan, she could have more slowly and smoothly built up to starring roles.
