Carey opts for Philips over Arena

Mariah Carey is breaking her date with Gwinnett. The pop diva was supposed to play the Arena at Gwinnett Center Sept. 9, according to tour information posted several weeks ago on her Web site. Now, the Web site says Carey will play Philips Arena on that day instead, one of the several stops on her "Charmbracelet 2003 World Tour".

The explanation: The list is not set in stone, according to the Carey camp. "It could change again," a Carey spokeswoman with Island records said. "This is the fist time she's toured in three years, and I think because it's been a while, she wants the best possible experience for her fans."

Carey would have been the latest big catch for the new arena, which has also landed Bruce Springsteen, George Strait and Alan Jackson. Preston Williams, Gwinnett Center general manager, said he wasn't jilted by the Carey's change of heart. He said performers don't always stick to their original plans, even if the concert dates are published on Web sites. Williams, who has 25 years in booking events, said he had a feeling things might change. "I won't confirm anything until I have a contract in hand," he said.

Carey has 15 No. 1 singles, two Grammy Awards, and holds the record for the most weeks spent on top of BillBoard's Hot 100 Singles chart. She is supposed to start her U.S. tour July 26 in Minneapolis.
