Mariah Carey scraps arena tour

Mariah Carey is downsizing. Though the diva announced dates for an arena tour back in April, she is now opting to play more intimate shows in theaters instead. A cryptic posting on her official Web site Thursday revealed the change, reading, "Mariah is planning something really special for her Charmbracelet 2003 U.S. tour." The site advised fans who purchased tickets to "hold onto your confirmations/receipts as we will be providing additional information shortly".

A spokesperson for Carey's record company, Island Def Jam/Monarc, said that the idea for the theater tour came from a fan posting on Carey's message board, and that the singer thought it would be exciting to have a more intimate environment with her fans.

A new itinerary is expected to be confirmed and revealed within a week. Carey's original U.S. leg was supposed to launch in Anchorage, Alaska, on July 18 and conclude with a stop in Manchester, New Hampshire, on September 23. Carey's label said that the trek will still take place this summer, roughly following the timetable previously announced, and said the change may also bring dates in additional markets, as less production would be necessary for the theater shows.

Prior to the North American leg, Carey is still scheduled to perform in Korea and Japan, beginning June 21 and wrapping July 15.
