Lauryn, Mariah sought for "A star is born"

"A Star Is Born" is being reborn ... again, with Lauryn Hill or Mariah Carey being sought for the lead role, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film, which originally appeared in 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and then again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

Jamie Foxx and his "Any Given Sunday" director Oliver Stone are rumoured to be seriously interested in the remake, which would follow the basic story of the original: A young hopeful marries an established star, and as her fortunes rise, his career collapses, with tragic results. This time, the story will add an additional "Romeo And Juliet" element, the Hollywood Reporter says.

The remake has been in development for several years, with Will Smith the intended lead player. But his participation was nixed by his decision to star in director Michael Mann's planned biopic based on the life of Muhammad Ali.

"A Star Is Born" would likely start shooting by summer, which means Stone's planned film with Kevin Costner, "Beyond Borders," will be delayed until the fall.
