A Mariah Carey's year
Mariah Carey has spent good and rough times during the past few years. Mariah closed 2002 with a hot album. However, Charmbracelet flopped in other countries such as England and Australia. 2003 began with a lot of goals and achievements to reach for Mariah. During the first months of this year, the second single of Charmbracelet, "Boy (I need you)", flopped in United States. But in April, the collaboration with Busta Rhymes put Mariah's name in the highest spots of Billboard once again. "I Know What You Want" became a smash hit world wide, introducing Mariah Carey to the rap charts of Billboard.
Mariah Carey's music didn't do so bad after all. "Boy (I need you)" and "Bringin' on the heartbreak" didn't get much airplay in United States, but both singles had success in other countries of the world. For example, "Boy (I need you)" did a #1 debut on Australian version of MTV-TRL. The video spent weeks in the first positions of the TOP 20 music videos of MTV Brazil.
Undoubtedly, the most spectacular thing of this year was the Charmbracelet World Tour. Mariah created an intimate evening during 62 dates. The tour became Mariah's tour with the most dates in the United States. The Charmbracelet World tour also included four dates in Japan, England, France, Austria, and the Netherlands, among others. The last part of the tour was dates in China, Philippines and other nine concerts in the United States.
Mariah also earned a few new important awards. She was presented with the Diamond Award, a career achievement award recognizing sales of over 100 million. Mariah also received the 2003 Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievements in the Field of Entertainment (female) during a live broadcast of the ceremony on March 1st, the 2003 Z100 Achievement award and the unique 2003 commemorative award recognizing more than 100 gold, platinum and multi-platinum certifications.
Even when this year Mariah didn't record a new studio album, Sony Music released a compilation album called "The Remixes", the album contains previously released remixes, as well as a new remix of "The One", and the new tracks "I Know What You Want" and "Miss you". The album hit stores in July in Japan. The album was released worldwide in October. The release of this compilation album in the United States was a real drama. Sony Music didn't ship enough copies until almost two weeks after the release date. However, "The Remixes" album reached a #26 debut on Billboard, and in the UK, the album reached higher sales during the first week than Charmbracelet.
After an acrimonious split with Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina became Mariah Carey's new career advisor. He supposedly denied Mariah the opportunity to publish her autobiographical book, which was set to be on sale in September of 2004. In July, Meddina's former client J.Lo launched a $100,000 lawsuit against him, claiming she felt "wronged and misrepresented" by the showbiz Svengali. Now, he is a "friend" of Lopez once again, and Mariah's position is still a mystery because Mariah can feel uncomfortable working with the same person, who works also for the "singer" who supposedly stole ideas during the summer of 2001.
Mariah's future plans were discovered this year. Mariah's intentions to keep her struggle to become a recognized actress were revealed. In February, TRL reported that Mariah Carey signed on to star in her next movie called "Sweet Science", playing a manager recruiting a young female boxer. In October, there were rumors about Mariah doing her theatrical debut starring The Sleeping Prince in London. And other rumors about other acting projects.
Now, Mariah Carey is making plans to open new dates for her extended Charmbracelet World Tour in Asia. Mariah may visit India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, among others. There is no information about a new single from her album, or about a new album for this year. But, according to Mariah, she is already writing new songs, that may be included eventually in a new album. Meanwhile, 2003 was a year filled with success, projects, music, and Mariah Carey.
