They're sported by Britney and Janet

Today they're worn by dozens of celebrities such as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Janet Jackson. And with their midriffs and thongs showing during television appearances and within the pages of a plethora of magazines, the craze over low-riding pants may seem like the newest passing trend.

But the commotion is nothing new. Instead, Tonya Twist, Mariah Carey's former stylist, is to blame for what she started some four years ago. "She cut off the waistband of Mariah Carey's Levi's and that caused a sensation," said Suzie Yalof Schwartz, executive fashion editor for Glamour. "Ever since then, we've been seeing them everywhere."

The pants, which can cost anywhere from $45 to $800, make your stomach visible to everyone and sitting down nearly impossible. But Schwartz said there are benefits, as well. "I think what's great about them is they make people with shorter torsos look longer," she said. "They're great for people who want to look taller and skinnier - and who doesn't want to look taller and skinnier? The problem is that they need to fix them so they ride higher in the back."

But the heavy price and dilemma of sitting down don't sway many from buying the pants.
