I don't agree at all with your theory. There is a conscious effort by the music industry to make sure Mariah does not tie that Beatles record for 20 Hot 100 #1 singles, talk less of breaking it but we all know for sure she's gonna do just that. If she isn't having a non-Christmas hit song it is mainly as a result of this, or she isn't looking to. Secondly out of all her peers Madonna, Celine, Mary J. Blige, I would take where Mariah is any day in terms of where their careers are currently. What she lacks in touring, ticket sales and those deceptive bundles to sell new albums, she more than makes up for from having 19 number one singles, a massive body of work that keeps on giving and owning her own masters then there's "All I Want For Christmas is you" - she isn't exerting herself going on tour after tour yet smiling to the bank yearly.

I kind of like the new version better than the 2010 one. Production wise it's definitely better and [Snoop] brings his flavor making [magic] with Mariah's re-recorded vocals which sound fuller. Plus for the most part Jermaine is kept on mute.

This is crazy in a good way. Haha. In no time Mariah is actually gonna have 4 diamond albums. Her debut album is so close to that diamond status and deservedly so and now "Merry Christmas" as well, it may even reach it before the debut.

High note harmonies (96,833)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|

Sounds kinda catchy doesn't it? Lol. Anyways, this new version of "Oh Santa" has become my favorite and that's saying a lot because I love (all caps) the original version from 2010. The new solo high note run Mariah does on this version is just sheer power, and those harmonies with Ariana just wow. Who is singing what on that harmonized section though they sound so identical.

Boy, am I pleasantly surprised. It wasn't Mariah's 2010 vocals and she actually re-recorded the song with Ariana and Jennifer and it sounds good. Well thought out who sings what and it didn't come across as "crowded". And those harmonies in the whistle register, just glorious. It came out better than I imagined. Now the holiday festivities can begin. Happy holidays.

That Mariah power (96,733)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Often imitated, never duplicated. [It's] funny how suddenly every artist is having some sort of Christmas single release this season from Kelly Clarkson releasing her own song that shares the same title literally as "All I Want For Christmas is You" (yeah I'm not kidding lol) to Tinashe, Jordin Sparks and even to Snoop Dogg. Everyone wants to make bank at Christmas time just like Mariah Carey. Too bad she's got a 26 year head start on them.

Copy and paste (96,692)
by Terna from Nigeria

With the announcement of the Ariana and Jennifer Hudson collaboration with "Oh Santa" being the song of choice, I just hope and pray it isn't one of those disjointed copy and paste hideous duets that have no soul (When Christmas Comes with JL, It's a Wrap feat. Mary J. Blige) where you can even hear the bad edits. I see a lot of comments about who's gonna outsing who but no one seems to be talking about this, they may be singing along to her 2010 vocals. Lol.
PS: If you actually think Ariana can outsing Mariah Carey even today, you must be high on something.

I like that song a lot and even then when I heard it for the first time, it felt like Mariah should be singing it. I do hope it sees the light of day this Christmas in the vein of "The Rarities" and everything she's released so far. Who knows an Christmas "Rarities" may be on the horizon.

Underneath The Stars video (96,619)

I couldn't help but feel nostalgic as this song makes me feel, and watching the video for the very first time it dawned on me that this was the very first song I ever heard from the "Daydream" LP, and boy have we come a long way since then. It's always going to have a special place in my heart. So sublime. Thanks Mariah for this rare gem. Lots of love as always.

Will, don't play with me like - her own version of Allure's "Last Chance" I'll straight up pass out. Lol. That song is so dear to me. I played it for a friend of mine once and he was like "Wow, this song is perfect" then proceeded to learn the whole song and couldn't stop singing it. Haha.

Loverboy versus (96,386)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Seriously? We're comparing the two versions now? Lol. Anyways I like both and can appreciate the absolute [musical] genius Mariah is for coming up with the [Candy] version and making it work. I can appreciate the [Firecracker] version, but it kinda digressed after a few spins for me and sometimes sounds "noisy", too loud, with too much going on at some points to make sense musically. Vocally Mariah sounds healthier on the Firecracker version but the Candy version has a better vocal performance (she uses her voice more) by far than the Firecracker one. It's playtime is also longer giving it room for more adlibs and let's not forget the shade by [Da Brat] sing rapping to the melody of the stolen sample "Hate on me much as you want to." Lol. Epic. These reasons are why I prefer the Candy version over the [Firecracker] one.

Exactly how I felt it comes across as disjointed like two songs merged together that don't work. I skip it every time too. Maybe I would just edit the vocal intro using "Audacity" and delete the rest because I like that part. Haha.

Re: Fave five The Rarities songs (96,000) (96,014)

I Love a good list sometimes, ok here goes: 1. "Loverboy" (Firecracker - Original Version) - I looked forward to this more than any other song on this record and I was not disappointed at all. 2. "Can You Hear Me" - Like all songs from that era this song has that sound, one of the purest, nostalgic feeling ever that cannot really be described in words you have to feel it. 3. "Mesmerized" - An instant favorite and I have already played it more than the others according to my music player. 4. "I Pray" - Never really paid attention to the original version she wrote for that boy, this is the first time I'm hearing it and it's by Mariah and I love her version. The message of this song is so potent even today. 5. "Cool on You" - This digressed just a little bit for me after a few listens, but I still like it especially the "Kick Rocks" part. Lol. This was Mariah practicing to write the most scathing diss song just two years later. Hehe.

One Night (96,013)
by Terna from Nigeria

Honestly, I couldn't care for this song and after sitting with the album now for a minute, I could say I don't like it at all, matter of fact it is the only song that I don't like. It starts off really intriguing and it almost seems like its gonna be a huge Mariah Carey vocal moment (like only she can do) the way the vocal intro gets intense with just a few bars in (kinda like Whitney Houston's "Didn't we almost have it all"), only for it to morph like Jess Glynn's "Real Love" into some long, drawn out noisy mess of a song. Even when playing it for the first time, I couldn't wait for it to end. Lol. I can see why it was left off. It doesn't really go anywhere. Mariah should've left this one in the vault and replaced it with something else.

The Rarities (95,918)
by Terna from Nigeria

Currently playing this magnificent gift from Mariah Carey and I can honestly say I love all (all caps) the songs. Hashtag "Justice For Loverboy" is already a thing on social media. Lol. The original Firecracker version has this bounce that unfortunately the Candy version kinda lacks. Certain tracks stood out to me more than others as they were instant favorites. 1. "Can You Hear Me" - Something about Mariah singing with effort that's so satisfying to listen to. I Love love this one. 2. "Mesmerized" - This reminds me strongly of Meteorite but more 70's like a soundtrack of "Saturday night fever" and those hidden high notes are a plus, caution this one's an ear worm. Lol. 3. "Cool On You" - Loved this easily, reminiscent of the "Lil' Love" song she did with Bone thugs in 2007 as well. Thank goodness Jermaine is mute on this one seeing as his team produced this song. 4. "I Pray" - The message of this song still stands strong even today. 5. "Loverboy" - Screw you "Tommy Mozzarella". Lol. This would've without a doubt hit number 1 back in 2001 and he knew it. It's such a bop. 6. All I Live For - Takes me back to the "Music box" era, powerful smooth vocals and catchy haunting melody so 90's. I'm glad we also get to have high quality versions now of "Slipping Away", "Do you think of me" and "Everything Fades Away". Thank You Mariah this is a gem right here.

Loverboy Firecracker version (95,908)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I love it. It's very different to the Candy version, sparse in production and more vocally driven. I would say it does actually go well with the movie, could totally hear this played in the film, it's giving me "fame" vibes actually. I can see why Mariah was peeved. Lol. Honestly I appreciate the two of them. I would be bopping to this for a long while.
