The second coming of Mimi (59,073)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
I have this strange feeling that Mariah will slay 2016. I remember thinking about Mariah during 2015's New Year's Day and I thought that 2015 will be a turning point for Mariah and in 2016 she will do something big. Like Daydream, TEOM kind of big. I was honestly shocked when my predictions for last year turned out to be true. My heart is ready now, come on Mimi, cometh upon and annihilate the charts.

Adele in MCA (58,943)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
Tbh I'm happy for Adele for her success and is a fan of her music. I wish nothing but the best for her (see that pun?). But Mariah and Adele are two different artists with different artistries and I will never be threatened by any other artists' success, not even when they break all of our Mimi's records. Because while all those records are awesome, I did not become a full blown lamb because of those. I fell in love with Mariah because of her music, and her voice. She's done a million things to the industry and I'm very, very proud to know that she has broken barriers between genres and revolutionised the pop music landscape, musically and vocally. I love her because she's Mariah [censored] Carey, not because of her having 18 no. 1s, or the longest running number 1 of all time, or any other records she has broken. With or without those amazing records, she will still have her imprint all over the music world. Tbh I'd rather look up to someone who has no #1s but has influenced a generation of musicians after her than having all the 18 no.1 hits but only achieved those through chasing trends and not making a way for other artists.

Re: Celine's Rockefeller moment (58,856) (58,863)
by darrian liu from taiwan

When I watched it, Mariah's Rockefeller incident was the first thing that ran through my mind. Celine's tone was beautiful there but her pitch overall was messy there. I thought the media actually sucked up to Celine compared to how they literally dragged Mariah on asphalt after the Rockefeller. The public on the other hand pretty much gave the same treatment to both after their not-the-best performance.

But happy new year, everyone. Mariah have been doing so well in 2015, especially the second half of it like someone said. I hope that 2016 is when she finally pulls out something really big and proves everybody wrong. The Lambily and Mariah have been doing it throughout the 90s and again in 2005, so why not 2016? The Second Coming of Mimi, let's make it happen (plays 1995 MSG performance of Make It Happen).

Ikr, even with all the things she's done in her career I still somehow think that not the full potential of her musical gift is used just yet. I'd love to hear her do that.

#11 on the BB Hot 100 (58,740)
by darrian liu from taiwan

That's an awesome feat you all. AIWFCIY is actually Mariah's highest charting single since Obsessed and whether or not it cracks the top 10 next week, I'm extremely proud of MC. Plus, a 21 year old song that still charts that high? (all caps)

I've been suggesting Mariah to incorporate elements of EDM to update her signature sound for quite a long time now, I think she can definitely pull it off. However, like you said, I'd rather see her flop but stays true artistically to herself than scoring hits with music she doesn't love. But I'm still excited and hoping she would do it because it's a new thing for Mariah. However, as long as the new song is good, I'm more than happy.

A very Mariah Christmas (58,694)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|
|
Merry Christmas for all of you. It's been a very Mariah Christmas, seriously. As expected, AIWFCIY is everywhere but I was ecstatic because Mariah was literally. Played. Everywhere. In one store they played AIWFCIY. At the same time, the next store played Oh Santa. I literally hear Mariah everywhere. They played Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) cover so many times it's unreal. They even played God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Mariah is truly the queen of Christmas

When I say 1996 vocals I meant 1996 vocal technique. Lol. I know that right now her lives can't compare to her studio recordings, it's obvious. She needs more training and hard work to live up to her recordings. Or maybe she can record something simple and stays in a comfortable range. Help Me Make It Through The Night and Right To Dream songs are perfect for her right now.

Re: Performance with Busta (58,284) (58,294)

I ain't being delusional. It's true that Mariah seldom goes off-pitch. Singers who are talented naturally stays on-pitch. In studio, she seems to have more confidence too. That's what makes a difference between her studio recordings and live performances. The numbers I presented were used as a figure of speech to emphasize her seldom she goes off-pitch. Mariah doesn't just scream out notes then autotune it in studio. For example, Make It Look Good's high note. It is autotuned but that note is very well-placed and nicely sung. Autotune only corrects pitch.

I think there's a difference too in live singing and studio recordings. Based on personal experiences, while recording I can hit better notes because there are only few people around. I feel more assured and can hit higher notes and better notes while recording. Singing live, there's so many hesitations because there are a lot watching so naturally you'll feel more hesitant. Mariah has said that she's more of a recording artist so maybe that's what she felt post-1996. From 1990 to 1996 she consistently surpasses her recording. After that she starts to have a lot of insecurities in her voice although it's still very much capable of doing what it used to do. I'm one of those who think her 1996 vocals can come back, she just needs to work very hard to polish her technique. I think that's why post-1996 she rarely surpass her studio recordings.

Re: Performance with Busta (58,273) (58,275)

Ok, first of all, Mariah seldom goes off-pitch. This isn't some "Mariah's singing is always perfect" bull, this is a fact. Even in her Rockefeller 2014 fiasco, she hit the correct notes, it's just that her voice is very scratchy and cracks all over in that performance. Pitch is one of the most basic things every decent singer will always master, it's basically the easiest thing to keep in singing. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated sharp pitch accuracy and only goes off pitch 1% of the time. What you hear post-1997 from her in bad performances are overly chesty mix resulting into tension, scratchy, unprepared vocals and cracks. Even in her bad performances she still kept her pitch pretty accurate. Second, in studio, she can record multiple takes and piece the best chunks of each takes into the rough mix. Recorded songs are meant to be as good as possible because it's what you present to the public, the material you're promoting. It's what getting into the radios, etc. You won't just record a song in one take and let the bad pieces in it. On stage you will ultimately do some flaws because we're humans and you know, notes don't go back into our throats after we sing it. Don't even try to imply that her voice is doctored so much in the studio it became the flawless voice we heard. She probably uses Autotune to define her runs (mostly not for pitch) and correct out some slightly flat and slightly sharp belts. It's not even that much Autotune. Her voice isn't even that scratchy anymore, as long as she warms up properly, her voice will be smooth like silk. It's incorrect to say that Mariah post-1997 is pitchy because the woman probably went off-pitch less than 25 times in her 25 years in the music industry.

Hot for the Holidays (58,268)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|

I thought her performance was pretty good. Nicely done whisper voice (although she did crack once while singing the chorus, it's however obvious that she's been warming up properly as her head voice sounds smoother and less airy). Her chest voice is nicely supported and her runs were mostly on point. No pitch issues (lol Mariah seldom goes out of pitch) and there's little roughness in her belts. She's showing improvements consistently and her tone is actually getting smoother, healthier and less dry. It is not her best, but then it's far from being her worst. I don't expect her to come out with a mindblowing vocal performance with this song because it's a song that has a simpler vocal arrangement and obviously doesn't call for Mariah hitting perfect high belts or crazy agile runs. I do think she's a bit too still on stage and she should've added more movements but her vocals are actually good.

But was leaking a bad isolated vocal track really necessary? Anybody with a decent heart will not do such things because that's not the way how you should treat people. Mariah did something wrong and the whole "being late for hours" thing was unprofessional for anyone, even for people of her calibre but I would never leak something that would destroy someone's reputation because it's not right. I mean I would feel guilty for days if I'm the one who leaked the track, even if it was accidental. Doing something like that could've costed someone's whole career. Mariah is lucky she is an established star with 25 years of success. That leaked track could annihilate a rising star's career like Tori Kelly. It's obvious that Mariah is a victim and while she did do something wrong and unprofessional, she did not deserve that leaking of the track. That's evil. Lol idk what the bleep were you thinking, sometimes try to put yourself in her place, how would you feel if that leaking happened to you? Would you still go "well I did come late so I guess I deserved a bulldozer on my public image and possibly my career"? Come on, don't be such a penis.

It's actually the original AIWFCIY vocals in 94, I'm not sure about when the scats were recorded. This is actually a fan remix and he got the lead vocal stem from the hack. It was a breathtaking remix seriously, [...] I love it so much my heart hurts. Thanks Mandy for sharing this gem, I need Mariah to discover this and sing it live. Release it. Perform it. [...] I live for this remix.
