The return of the voice (108,837)
by Terna from Nigeria

I am so worried about her. I think it's time we held her up in prayers (yes God is real, she's his child and prayers work). Something is going on behind the scenes, and I called it out last year that she was giving me Whitney vibes - it's like watching her headed for a train wreck. We all have love for this woman and in many ways, we express it differently, but I believe all from a place of concern. Now that means you care about her well-being not just as a regular casual listener on the outside. She said it best, we're her extended family (and family look out for each other). I believe this and that's why I didn't bring up the Mimi session, neither am I making any commentary on it, it was posted while I was typing my last message and I watched it and was heartbroken. There might be a side to this we're not seeing, and the voice is just a symptom or an indicator. Pray specifically for her well-being - physically, mentally, her safety. Back her up in prayers, after all that's all we can do.

I'm not mad at Mariah. I'm mad at the people behind the sessions, those who probably could give her honest feedback, but conveniently go with the flow instead. Michael also surrounded himself with sycophants and leeches who clap until the show was no more. You might like the sessions, but if you can't see there's something very wrong going on, I don't know what to think.

Sounds like you're giving excuses for her. "She's not really a regular singer." Well then she needs to be a regular singer, if regular means being disciplined, getting training all over again, getting a voice coach that understands her situation (and preferably also a voice therapist in tow) and knows exactly what to do and how to go about it, having some form of a routine mapped out for her and seeing where it goes, because having this attitude and being a half assed singer without knowing the tricks of the trade is what put her in this problem to begin with. It is quite sad to see how much singing ability she has lost, literally everything. And then she keeps touring (with which voice exactly?). D'you know how grueling touring is on a normal voice that doesn't have nodules, talk less of one like hers that does - the reason why every time she toured it affected her voice negatively. For someone who's shows are all about the voice, she sure shouldn't be giving any performances on any stage whatsoever with how shot her voice is currently (call it as it is, we can all hear it). Standing there giving absolutely nothing on stage and thinking the audience would not notice? I am a true fan/Lamb or whatever you wanna call it, and Mariah has been getting on my nerves lately, I scroll right past any posts about her concerts, because I already know what to expect. How much more those who paid money to see her in person. She will soon be booed off that stage, then maybe finally jolt back to reality and seek professional help.

I want to throw a jab, but that list is actually so funny LMAO. Why is everyone so unserious here? On all seriousness though, you can taper it down to Mariah just having a handicapped voice plus overworking.
She's not really a regular singer, think of her process in masterclass where she hums and leads the band until they get it right, that then doing the production, vocal arrangements, tripling background vocals, staying up until 7 in the morning with the audio engineer. All that, times a million songs.
But yeah I almost resented Mariah for never ever sounding like 96 Tokyo Dome live. But then I think about how her voice is literally heaven sent. It's like you will have the most beautiful voice ever but the trade is, you'll have nodules and it'll be super fragile, but you'll be gifted artistically though. Like everyone will be left in the dust.
To simplify it. A regular singer would be training vocally for 2 hours. Mariah would meet with the band and write chord progressions for hours, humming - overworking her voice. Lead the producers to get things right - with her voice. Then hit up the background singers and arrange some adlibs. Again through her voice. Then keep editing and trying until her handicapped voice is worn out. That would be 10 or more hours.
She did that since 84, that's more than 40 years of just giving it your all. Driven by the fear of being poor again and disappointing her fans and the label.
The inevitable result is her voice being shot. She really did the best with what she got. Everyone needs to be grateful and give her, her well deserved flowers.

Mariah looked beautiful in her gowns but I could barely watch the clips. No expression in her face, barely moving, very low energy, looking zoned out for long periods of time. I'm trying to keep hope alive but we keep getting the same thing repeated each show.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (108,633)
by Terna from Nigeria

Mariah Carey is actually still very current and still for the most part, a current star still breaking records and creating new ones. Yes her name does at its mention, remind people of the staggering success she's had and a long fruitful career too. However I do agree and see it from their perspective, and I also notice the Hall of Fame is kinda a retirement home for old stars or groups that have made their mark and to say it nicely, burnt out or even worse, no longer with us. Mariah still has at least one more big era in her; that woman is not quite done yet and they know this. She'll have her moment for sure, just not now.

Is Mariah about to pull a "Chris Brown" with this Mimi 20th release 40 plus tracks over? Lol. Honestly, I'm so stoked for this release, being that it is my absolute all-time favorite record. It has never left and will never leave my playlists. Thank you Mariah for not giving up, and recognizing the crucial importance of the timing of this album. I smiled with such pride, running into the different Lamb appreciation reels and shorts on TEOM, one of which she just posted in Instagram.

It is so sad that people get away with so much evil and the good souls like miss Stone, most often are the casualties of the such scenarios. This is what Muni Long addressed on the Breakfast Club last year, there's so many ways an artist or creator of music can get ripped off in the business, if you don't find all those loopholes. You have to know the way songwriting, publishing, royalties etc. Work and ensure no other person's name is documented where it should be yours - she even says once in a while revisit and recheck just to make sure. It's just so alarming the way that music industry is full of snakes. May Angie Stone rest now.

Yes, it so sad about her passing. I send prayers to her children and family. I am glad that I have my collection to listen to her music. What is really bizarre is that a few months before her death she exposed on Facebook Live that Universal Music had been receiving all of her royalties and mechanicals for all of the songs she has written. That is really sad knowing she has been in the music industry for over 40 years and she doesn't have the money to show for it.

I have mixed feelings about this performance of Shake It Off from 2 days ago. I am glad that MC can take a break now from performances for awhile. I would love for MC to reinvent herself and her music before releasing MC16. I am hoping MC can become the new Lana Del Rey in terms of reinventing herself and people loving her music like it was her first album.

Lol. I love your optimism, but just no, [that] just reminded me of that hideous "Fall in love at Christmas" song with Khalid and Kirk Franklin (ugh). I also really don't like Kim Burrell, her style of Gospel, [definitely] don't like her [voice] either. She's only known in Gospel [because] she's capable of doing riffs and runs and honestly, I always feel that's overrated, I prefer straight singing with a little bit of riffs and runs only when the song calls for it, or the melody gets lost. Reason why I don't dig Jazmine Sullivan, nor Beyoncé's singing either. Mariah needs a vocal coach who understands whistle register voices, they work differently from regular voices. Then the bad habits - [bubbly], breaking into whistles even when talking, talking too much etc. I guarantee you, she would see changes positively.

Terna, I was thinking today that MC should try a more spiritual church method to improve her voice. Gospel artist and pastor Kim Burrell could help MC by getting her to do a couple of church performances after a month of strengthening her voice with her Kim Burrell could help MC improve her voice with some old church hymns without all of the studio gimmicks. Because He Lives, Lead Me Oh Lord and I Surrender My All are the perfect hymn songs for improving your vocal skills. I am just thinking how I love to hear MC sing gospel songs.

Voice (108,187)
by Terna from Nigeria

Honestly, I want Mariah to try a voice coach and speech therapist first before considering surgery. Build her main voice back (no whistle register - neglect this register for a while, it is parasitic on the main voice). A change of lifestyle choices too can make a world of difference. Get disciplined like your life depends on it, because honestly it does, the "Mariah Carey" brand is mainly her voice. Cut out bad habits (if any) she picked up along the way, that came with the fame (bubbly, late nights partying, smoking etc). To be able to go into the studio and wow with one-takes or her ability to step on stage and command the entire show as she once used to with just singing is going to required real discipline and determination cos she's older now.

I am thinking about this topic more often these days so I wanted to ask for your opinion: what would happen if she went for surgery on her vocal cords, lose her high notes but she gets back her strength in the voice? Would you be happy with new sounds of the voice or would you miss her old voice?

Sorry Robert, but no. She sounds really bad. And struggles through basic notes now. Her voice is ice cold if it makes sense. This is Whitney Houston all over again if not even worse, because even in that, Whitney had her moments where you heard her old sound shine through - she had more voice to work with than the Mariah of today, it's just bad all through - low notes, barely there chest voice, no modal voice (mix between chest and head), totally closed up 5th and 6th octave (no access at all), weak to non-existent falsetto/superhead voice if any, and irritating screechy whistle notes. With all these, where does she even begin? And with a repertoire like hers that requires all these parts of voice. It's so sad to witness.

Remastering Daydream (107,898)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Yeah I am well aware of the concept of the loud wars, and how it might be perceived as unnecessary for some records or distorting and "changing the feel" for others, but if done right, could really enhance the sound like with Rainbow's anniversary last year. Just an observation actually. It always puzzled me how "dim" so to speak "Daydream" sounds in comparison to "Butterfly" just 2 years later, although it also sits in a transitional era from analog to digital recordings which would explain that. ABMB, OSD and Fantasy on the "#1 to Infinity" record are remastered and I think and they sound great. Now the whole album remastered for Daydream 30th with full colored artwork and unreleased tracks would be epic and a satisfying collector's item. Idea.

Remastering Daydream (107,890)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
What you're hearing is an example of the loudness wars: essentially mastering engineers compress recordings to make them sound louder to compete with other poorly mastered (loud) records. This trend became mainstream thanks to Oasis and how their records sounded so much louder on the radio, and due to their popularity, everyone else started doing it. Daydream is an excellently recorded and mastered album, boasting a dynamic range of 13 which is one of the highest in her catalogue. It'd be a shame to lose all those beautifully subdued and quiet moments of the record against the crescendos and climaxes. But that's the way things seem to be going. Personally the CD sounds superb and doesn't need updating in my view. But who am I?

I played this record the other day on Spotify and couldn't help notice that it wasn't digitally re-mastered and thus has a significantly lower volume level (you actually have to have Spotify's volume normalization feature on loud to get it to a significant boost in sound level - most recordings from the mid 90's backwards actually) for today's standards than say "Butterfly" or even "Rainbow" which she did earlier on this year. I'm hoping that for its 30th anniversary, she finally does this next year, giving it a long needed update in sound while also reintroducing the album - I dare say is top 3 in her overall best albums, there's no denying this. 1. Butterfly 2. Daydream 3. Mariah Carey 4. The Emancipation of Mimi 5. Music Box

Aww. Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate the effort. And I'm glad you got the effect of "camouflage" being where I placed it, as the intent was to not follow the album tracklisting but to also not choose a song that begins abruptly and from the list of songs chosen, "Camouflage" was that song and it goes really well with "Angels Cry". "Yours" to me is always a breath of fresh air and that Intro is epic.

Just one word. Wack. Too glitchy, the tempo on the vocals aren't smooth, placed too far back in the mix. Just no please. This sounds like someone learning how to produce pieced this together. This song is actually the very first song that I heard from the debut album and so it holds a very special place in my heart. Just a gorgeous, well written and sung ballad.
