In simple terms, the Icon Award is arguably a pointless award. It is a lifetime achievement award renamed so as to not sound like someone is an old hat. But there is obviously a set list of people who might get it: people with 20 year careers plus who still retain some kind of active recording career now and within that a hierarchy of people who are more successful and/or prominent than the others. So J.Lo fits the bill. But it is questionable whether she should come before Celine and Mariah. In the same sense it is fair to question why Madonna has not been awarded it above everyone else. It is fair to question where the likes of Britney fit into all of this. In short, the list of awardees is already set in stone so it's hardly exciting. It's just a question of in what order they hand it about. That makes it pointless. Arguably.

Agreed. Mariah is never going to deliver anything spectacular anymore. But it genuinely felt like she and the crowd acknowledged that and she's moved to just being loved for being Mariah Carey and indispensable. I loved it. Love love loved it. When she threw the tissue I howled with laughter. My girl right there. I love you, Mariah. Despite being your fiercest critic. You reminded me why you're a legend and that, once upon a time, in ages passed, in 1993, I recognised your greatness. And a lifetime obsessing over you was a lifetime well spent. Well spent. So proud. You were always iconic to me.

Mariah smashed it. She looked and sounded great. I sang, I smiled, I welled up, I laughed and then I tore up some more. All in ten minutes. Mariah Carey smashed it, y'all.

This is an unmitigated disaster, getting Jennifer Hudson to sing a Mariah Carey song better than Mariah Carey can right before Mariah Carey gets on and lips her own climax. How Mariah's people allowed this to happen is beyond me. So Dove in the USofA, I absolutely should be Mariah's manager because she constantly employs people who don't know their arse from their elbow. And singing "A No No" is ridiculous. It is not going anywhere on any chart. Caution is already dead. Why ruin a once in a career opportunity to shine peddling some shit nobody wants? it's a chance to remind people of your brilliance, not highlight that you don't sell anymore. Fingers crossed it's not the shitshow it seems destined to be.

Mariah would do well to follow up Caution with a new album quickly and keep some sort of momentum. I think a third Christmas album would be good - "M3rry Chrismtas" - followed up with a Summer record next year. Something fun and less morose and mundane than her latest release. But, to be honest, I am not sure where else she can go musically. She fails to embrace shifts in music and seems stuck in the past. I think a club/disco/party album would be great. A jazz album would be just another snoozefest ignored by the masses but pleasing only those lambs who requested it merely because that is all they think her vocally capable of producing. Mariah needs a new concept, a new direction, a new raison d'etre.

You've only just realised that everything Brandon says is disingenuous, purposely manipulative, often even intentionally untrue? This accounts for 98% of his messages lol. The other 2% is Bruno Mars and The Smeezingtons.

We Are Lambily (89,273)
by Andrew from London UK
| |
|
|
Ah, you. I had no idea [who] you were so checked out your message history. You have had an interesting few months posting here. Let's breakdown your response to my post to analyse its merits. I'll keep an open mind.
"You never liked her because you never really [knew] the human being but instead you do know the nasty things the blogs/the media say about her." My opinion was formed over the years through watching Whitney perform, present or receive awards and be interviewed. I, myself, cannot recall ever reading "nasty" things in the media, save for reporting and commentary on her drug addiction and self-harming behaviour.
"Whitney Houston was raised in a church and all she ever wanted was to sing." Her religious beliefs are irrelevant here. And singing was not "all" she ever wanted to do. She wanted to.be rich and famous. And she got it through having a singularly unique vocal instrument. What she also got was natural public scrutiny of her behaviour (as above). There is nobody in Western Society free of accountability for their actions. And the higher you get, the harder the fall - in any industry.
"Her friends describe her as funny, loyal, strong, kind etc and frankly I don't care what people who didn't know her has to really say." My friends would describe me as having positive attributes. You have and would almost certainly disagree. Following your logic, you are automatically wrong. Ergo, you think I am awesome.
"Her addiction to drugs was human and *perhaps* her downfall." It could strongly be argued that her addiction to a partner who was clearly not good for her was her downfall. Or her inability to live a happy life as (allegedly) a bisexual person because of her devotion to that there wonderful church in which she was raised which most likely would have shunned her for having a homosexual relationship.
"I would ask you to have enough respect to not lie about a death women or to disrespect Mariah's friend." Because Mariah was her friend Whitney is no-go for analysis and criticism? But J-Lo and Ariana Grande are fair game because Mariah doesn't like them? I cannot see your defence of these persons in your message history.
"All those characteristics suits you even better Andrew." Well you just learned that your own personal logic means I am awesome.

When You Don't Believe (89,265)
by Andrew from London UK

I never liked Whitney Houston as a person. I liked some of her songs and I saw her live in 1999 which I can say was amazing and not many people can say they saw Whitney live. But she was always a bitch. She never did not come across as a bit whacko. And sinister. I think the only reason she befriended Mariah was because she knew Mariah's voice had become slightly diminished. She would never have gone up against Mariah in 94/95. I firmly believe this. And it didn't shock me to see When You Believe missing from Whitney's Greatest Hits. That album was a must-buy. It was of its time, at the right time. And it was actually the end of Whitney's popular career. But WYB was missing. Duets abounded that album. But not the Mariah Carey duet. Wonder why? It was a snub. I think Whitney Houston was an obnoxious person. Just look at her showboat at The Oscars. Look at Mariah glance at her. Her voice was powerful. But her songs were mostly shit and she just seemed to bellow at every given opportunity. Shout outs to All The Man That I Need, I Believe In You And Me and I Love The Lord. musical masterpieces. So I am not denying that she was brilliant. I simply mean to say that everything about her as a person was obnoxious. Like leaving WYB off her Greatest Hits. It wasn't a mistake. I would bet the farm. And all the lambs therein.

"Her voice has changed but she can still sing." The veracity of that claim will depend on what you would refer to as "singing". Mariah's issues are far deeper than her voice "changing". However, let us not debate this again for you hissy fit at accurate observations which are adverse to your goal of defending Mariah at all - including the truth's - cost.

Someone's on the wine. Mariah's problem is she doesn't understand what people wanna hear. Remember hearing: "But inevitably, yeah" when she used to sing it low? Great. Her ad libs like "no nuh" are unnecessary. It's like the "Higher than the heavens uh-buh-uhv." It's "Higher than the heavens "uh-buhv". It would actually sound good if she dropped the extra nonsense. I dunno. I know the voice has pretty much gone, but if she can still sing and hit some high notes to popular songs like ABMB then why not? ABMB is everyone's hug and smile song. A medley so I be awful. She does them so stop and start and fills the interludes with "Do you remember his song?" Tragic. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Definitely pants. Or the exact second ensemble she wore at heart radio. the one where she actually walked.
In terms of ABMB, instead of lipping the climax with an awful and obvious transition, she should break out long whistle notes. If she can still do them.
However, does anyone honestly believe she's not going to statue herself to the spot in a sparkly gown and sing We Belong Together?

So even though my medley would be the best ever, I now think Mariah should just do ABMB and get crowd interaction for the do do do's from the different sections with the "I see you up there" and be herself. She could even add a third new verse. That would be ground-breaking and a talking point.
I got the Icon Award yeah Bllboard want me to stay And I like that you like me And Mimi's not going away
Something like that. She has it in her to so something out of the ordinary and make it a talking point of her career. Something like that would be sick. And Mariah wear pants and walk, own the stage.
I get pumped when Mariah wins awards and does TV performances. Don't let me down, Mariah. Show them your confidence and that you are Mariah Carey.

Iconic performance (89,142)
by Andrew from London UK
| |

Mariah cannot deliver a powerhouse vocal anymore and she doesn't dance or even move much. So she will have to do a medley. I suggest this:
1. Spotlight. "Looking In" first and second verse. "The real me..." fades into drum beats for: 2. "Emotions" chorus, no intro. High note is cut off by: 3. "Yo New York in the house" and first verse and chorus of Fantasy. "Not sleepen" cuts off to: 4. "Gimme your love"s from the Heartbreaker JV remix for the second verse finishing on the "break my heart" fade to silence and black: 5 . Drum beat. "I came to have a party." Pause. Rest of verse and chorus of ILT. Cuts to: 6. "Obsessed" verse and chorus. Cuts to: 7. "A No No" verse and chorus. Fade out to silence 8. Last verse of "Looking In". "It seems as though I've always been..."
Off the top of my head that would be awesome and have meaning and would flow with fast pace. She needs an avalanche of dancers with amazing choreography and a lighting display and pyrotechnics worth a small fortune.
Please the Lord, no Hero, no WBT, no VOL. Just dance tracks to make people party and remind them of her.
