It's time video views (112,249)

It was done in collaboration with Sephora darling, meaning their account and Mariah's account posted it. This company is worth around $20-25 billion. They definitely dropped some bank on getting this video around. It's also broadcasted on Sephora's colossal Billboard in Times Square. Basically, Mariah's iconic star power + cultural relevancy + high production value + likeability and shareability of the commercial are most likely why it's such a huge success. I can't even believe Mariah in her 35th year is still getting deals like she's the hottest, newest star. Literally your other faves could never. Mariah truly found an infinite money glitch during Christmas. God really handpicked her to be fully in charge of his season.

I get where you're coming from, the Amazon and Sephora tie-ins can make it feel hugely commercialized. But working with Amazon doesn't equal supporting Bezos or his politics either. He hasn't been running the company, he's already stepped down as CEO and a lot of artists use it simply because it is today's biggest open market and Mariah seems to just be competing strategically.
I also think there's a bit of a mix-up here. When Mariah performed in the Amazon, her message was about protecting the rainforest raising awareness for deforestation, Indigenous rights, and the need to preserve it. The Amazon company is a totally separate issue. People are pressing them because of their big carbon footprint from shipping and data centers, but that's not directly connected to the rainforest itself.
The overlap is mostly because they share the same name. So while I get why it feels hypocritical at first, the two "Amazons" actually represent very different environmental conversations.
Fair point though, to feel uneasy about mega corporate tie-ins, but in today's industry, brand partnerships are how artists fund ambitious projects and global outreach.
But I still wouldn't categorize Mariah as tone-deaf or hypocritical. If anything, she avoids politics like the plague. She's also not out there like a lot of celebrities, tweeting about environmental causes every day, only to be exposed as virtue-signaling fools when people realize how much they travel in private jets.
Mariah is literally just being festive once a year, solidifying her legacy and collecting her coins.

Is it just me or does the new it's time video feel very tone deaf? It's not special anymore. It's literally a commercial for Sephora, partnering up with Amazon for merch and special album covers. Jeff Bezos is literally destroying the planet, he is also a huge supporter/fan the president. It's beginning to feel like she just cares about money at this point, also she just performed in the Amazon to bring awareness, yet she teams a person who's destroying it? Like? Anyone else feel this way?

Non-single deep cuts playlist (112,223)
by Lambi from USA

It's definitely a lot of belting, very Emotions-coded, she was not holding back. That key E? major is no joke either, she really made the engineer earn his check that night.
I Wish You Knew and Mine Again are in the same key too, she loved that bright soulful E? vibe during the Mimi era. Yours and My Saving Grace from Charm share the same key as well, it's really Mariah's comfort and danger zone at the same time.
Her belting register is seriously a cut above the rest though. She makes the highest, brightest notes so pleasant to the ears. No one to this day can replicate the tonal quality and the mind-blowing resonance of her belts. My faves are the climaxes on Butterfly, and all the live belts she threw down on the Daydream tour, specifically that Hero performance in Rotterdam.

Michael Jackson collab (112,186)

I meant with what was still up for grabs in the album. (The other 4 artists took the rest.) The most classic in the remaining ones boil down to Thriller vs. Human Nature. I believe we are correct though, Thriller most likely was it. Btw here is a snippet of what it might've sounded like. She also revealed that Thriller is her most favorite album of all time.

I remember the 25th Anniversary of Thriller, I ran to Target the day it come out to buy it. I still have it but haven't played it in a while. It is such a good album. Thriller would've been my first pick too for a collaboration. I think MJ has quite a few songs that would be considered classic, not just one or two.

Michael Jackson collab (112,170)
by Lambi from USA

Mariah has so many choreographable songs that she can't dance to either, though. LMAO. But yes, I've thought deeply about this too. In 2008, MJ released the Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition, which included remixes featuring various artists. I bet she was originally intended to be part of it. The remixed tracks were:
• The Girl Is Mine - will.i.am • P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - will.i.am • Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Akon • Beat It - Fergie • Billie Jean - Kanye West
The Girl Is Mine was already a duet with Paul McCartney, so by process of elimination, that would've left her with either: Baby Be Mine, Thriller, Human Nature, or The Lady in My Life.
Only Human Nature and Thriller are true classics (Mariah said it's one of his classics). For more context clues, she mentioned they were doing something "really huge" for him and that their collab would sort of "usurp" the situation."Usurp" means to lessen the importance of something, so I'd have to go with Thriller. It's the bigger hit and would make more sense that they'd want to protect it.
Honestly though, I think they just didn't want Mariah involved. How were the other 4 artists allowed, but not her? Michael handpicked the biggest stars from 2005-08. Sony probably resented that she was having massive success with Def Jam at the time. In my opinion, Thriller will always belong to Michael, regardless of how incredible Mariah's ad-libs and background vocals might have been. Just like how literally no one even knows about the other remixes.
And before my haters come for me, these are just my opinions based on what we can gather. Take a chill pill. I'm allowed to have them.

To maximize her full artistry, I'm picking one from from each decade: • 90s: Daydream • 00s: The Emancipation of Mimi
Lumping 2010s and 2020s together since there's only 3 albums to choose from, so the final one would have to be Here For It All.

A playlist I use as a secret weapon for pulling people deeper into MC's discography. It's a thrill seeing them secretly shazam it. It's made up of non-single deep cuts from each of Mariah's album (excluding holiday):
1. Vanishing (MC) 2. So Blessed (Emotions) 3. Music Box (MB) 4. Underneath The Stars (Daydream) 5. Close My Eyes (Butterfly) 6. Bliss (Rainbow) 7. Reflections (Glitter) 8. The One (Charm) 9. Joy Ride (TEOM) 10. Love Story (E=MC2) 11. Inseparable (MOAIA) 12. Dedicated (MIAMTEC) 13. One Mo' Gen (Caution) 14. Nothing Is Impossible (HFIA)
Curious what would yours look like?

Article: Mariah Carey fans still excited to see the icon in Perth (112,156)
by Lambi from USA

Mariah, at her core, is the discretion queen. I remember she fought tooth and nail when they threatened to release her private medical records. I'm kind of shocked she did a whole press release about having bipolar. Morgan already exposed her way back, so it wouldn't really make a difference if Stella did it. It's kind of like an open secret. If she does have fibromyalgia, I wouldn't be shocked, as she totally exhibits the characteristics of the disease but it's also something the whole world doesn't need to be knowing.

Thanks for putting that together. I know reviews and articles can sometimes be PR-driven, but I honestly think Rolling Stone just manages to hate everyone equally. I also find them to be inconsistent. For example, they gave Nirvana's Nevermind only 3 out of 5 stars, calling it "consistently noisy", and then later ranked it #6 on their 2020 500 Greatest Albums list. I guess it really depends on how bitter the writer is that day. Still, they've always seemed especially cold and dismissive towards Mariah.
I think by now we've all learned how to tell when a review is fair and when it's attempting to present fair. At this point, I've stopped taking Rolling Stone's articles seriously altogether. I mean, just as a rule of thumb, if you can give Mariah a bad review, you've pretty much outed yourself as having objectively bad taste in music and therefore, your opinions never really counted to begin with.
My brain simply falls apart having to rank all of her 16 albums, so I'll go with a top 6. In my household, the most on repeat are: TEOM, E=MC², MOAIA, Daydream, and Butterfly.

I've been digging into the ranking of reviews of MC album and it's interesting; her later work gets better reviews then her early work. I love her recent work more. Personally. Charmbraclet onward are my go-tos. Curious what you think (the order is best rated to least rated based on reviews from Rolling Stone, slate, etc.): 1. Caution 2. Here for it All 3. MOIA 4. Emancipation 5. E=MC2 6. Butterfly 7. Daydream 8. Merry Christmas 9. Music Box 10. Debut (Mariah Carey) 11. Emotions 12. Rainbow 13. Charmbraclet 14. Glitter 15. MIAM 16. Merry Christmas II You
I just wanna say; I love and play MCIIY way more than the first Christmas album. Her description of the first Christmas album being set in the country and the second is set in the city is totally perfect.

Casket edition. LMAO. Yeah, it was clear homegirl never ever did a live TV funeral performance before. She probably skipped her vocal warm-up since it was so early in the morning. It was also revealed later on she didn't rehearse that number at all.
I remember watching it on real time and feeling embarrassed for her. She got so much flak for her voice cracking, understandably so. I tried to give her some grace, but it was hard to defend her when Usher, Jennifer Hudson, and her own duet partner Trey Lorenz all did freaking amazing, and they all had to perform at the same early morning time frame.
Though based on the recording timeline, MOAIA wasn't fully completed by July 7 (MJ's funeral). Recording ran roughly from January to August 2009. Still, I would've taken a day off, made the room pitch black, cranked up the AC, and taken all the melatonin I needed to get the best sleep, just to be able to give the King of Pop a decent tribute. This was most likely a performance she doesn't care to recall.

That's actually really nice to hear. I just rewatched it, and I think your assessment is correct. Maybe a duet alongside a real musician, both a pianist and singer, motivates Mariah to put in real work? Like have some integrity homegirl.
I actually went to the taping of her medley on American Idol. She performed it 3 times too so they could edit it together and pass it off as fully "live", acting like they're just handpicking the best parts from each take. But as a true lamb, I'm ahead on which parts are always lipped on those 3 takes. That's why I'm cynical.
Still, the Save The Music performances definitely leans more towards being fully live, probably just lightly polished, which is standard for taped performances. She actually did deliver. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. I had that AOLT impromptu in mind too, it definitely leans more toward a "casual jam session" than a fully teched-up performance, but it's worth noting that it's completely live. She's totally capable, I mean, have you seen the TGIFY performances from 2017? Beltriah really came through. I think she's more at ease when she's surrounded by true fans at concerts, but for whatever reason, when it comes to TV appearances, Mariah defaults to miming the climaxes. Maybe it's really just the perfectionist in her.

She's done them here and there. Pretty sure the "impromptu" performance of The Art of Letting Go for the fans was live, and Make It Happen from Live8. Some of the Charmbracelet promotional shows had some songs fully live. But you're right, as a general rule they are rare as hen's teeth post-1999.

Even though I've ragged on .Paak before for his clownish behavior, I'll give credit where it's due. I genuinely appreciate his integrity when it comes to live performances. He actually got Mariah to sing fully live on a televised number. Yes, fully live. Not a single note was lipped. The last time I remember Mariah performing entirely live on TV was back in 1999 when she was promoting I Still Believe, with the rare exception of AIWFCIY on Fallon in 2013, though that one felt more like a casual kickback jam session than a proper, teched-up performance.
1999 was 26 years ago. We finally have an authentic live TV performance. We've waited way too long for this. It fills a void that's been missing for decades. Her voice may be more limited now, but I appreciate that it's 100% live, her integrity is so refreshing.
Oh and if anyone else knows of a rare instance of Mariah singing fully live on television post-I Still Believe, feel free to share.

I've been wondering about this too. Is homegirl in debt? Or has she simply built such an extraordinarily large lifestyle that she has to work herself to the bone, even while diseased, just to maintain it? I genuinely can't bear to watch another one of her recent performances. The state she's in on stage is honestly saddening.

A few years ago I went to one of her concerts and it wasn't well attended. Mariah called everyone to gather in front of the stage. After we were all at the front, security called us back to our seats. Mariah was really angry and left the stage immediately. After 45 minutes she came back and suddenly her hair was straight instead of curly and she just performed her show in a cold manner. But when she noticed that the audience was singing along she relaxed and had fun. I think touring is really tough and she should give herself more breaks. Mariah doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore. However, we don't know why she's playing so many concerts. Mariah should have enough money. But I have no idea how much money she paid or is paying Nick so she can keep the children. Who knows what else he might have to say about her. Lawyers are expensive. Combined with her illness, it's a tough burden to bear. I'm glad about HFIA, it is still a masterpiece. As far as I'm concerned, Mariah doesn't need to tour anymore and can just release a new album if she wants. The main thing is that she's okay. She did enough.

I was so impressed when she sang Lead The Way. I'm hoping to visit Philippines one day and join one of your guys' parties, they look so fun.

I love how you tallied it up and tied in HFIA. Galing naman. I agree about her formula, she is indeed hip-hop and is just being herself. Are you part of MCPhilippines?

After listening to the album twice a day, almost every day for nearly a month now, I thought of ranking it with the rest of her albums. Additionally, I considered ranking the singles according to my personal preference. I excluded Christmas albums and compilations intentionally.
1. Butterfly (It will always be on top.) 2. Glitter (It has grown so much in me that it made it to second best.) 3. Music Box (Top Pop album for me.) 4. Daydream (Top Pop & R&B.) 5. E=MC2 (While it is a second version of Mimi, I like more songs in here.) 6. The Emancipation of Mimi 7. Here For It All (If it were released in the 90s, it could be a sure-fire hit.) 8. Caution (I think it will do way better if released during, instead of MIAMTEC.) 9. Rainbow 10. Mariah Carey 11. Charmbracelet 12. Emotions 13. Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel 14. Me I Am Mariah The Elusive Chanteuse
And for the singles of HFIA - I ranked them through my '90s & early '00s self, lol. I realized that her "formula" has not changed, which I believe represents her musical artist identity.
1. Type Dangerous 2. Sugar Sweet 3. In Your Feelings 4. Play This Song 5. I Won't Allow It 6. My Love 7. Nothing Is Impossible 8. Here For It All 9. Jesus I Do 10. Mi 11. Confetti & Champagne
There's still hope for this album through continuous promotion and releasing singles with nice music videos. In Your Feelings, My Love, I Won't Allow It, and finally, the title track are good potential hits. She can reduce their price (like they used to in the 90s) as a Christmas gift. They can tie the promotion during this season. Nothing is impossible, right?
