UK fan meet / Colin (54,942) by Andrew from UK
Hi Colin. I can't see that the response was overly positive. Not really worth it, mate.

Carey-oke UK (54,905) by Andrew from UK
I was thinking of organising a UKMC fan meet up at a karaoke box in London in a few weeks/August. Book a karaoke room(s), sing and chat Mariah. Fans and lambs alike. Would anyone be interested? Pretty easy to organise. Let me know and I'll make it happen.

Lost in the woods (54,739) by Andrew from UK
A little off topic perhaps but when I was a teenager I used to drive home from work at night (with detour) and listen to:
5. Looking In
4. Petals
3. Close My Eyes
2. Everything Fades Away
1. Till The End Of Time
In that order. Was haunting. And angsty in a Dawson's Creek kinda way. And I have the forehead to match. I think Mariah always did something special with magical, spirit-of-youth sentiments, both lyrically and musically. It's what made her special and stand out, as the other two in the vocal trinity could never have pulled it off. I'm talking Underneath The Stars, Fourth of July, All I've Ever Wanted, Rainbow (Interlude). Every time I watched the video to, and heard, Spice Girls' Viva Forever I felt they'd ripped off a part of Mariah's nineties innocence-lost-in-the-woods vibe. So all of these songs that lifted me and others away to this, even The Roof did it (innocence-lost-in-the-city), are the ones I hold most dear. No other vocalist or singer-songwriter did it. And I used to force people to listen to them to show them it wasn't always about acrobatics. Girl had soul and carried people away to other worlds. Now it's all "tea" "outside the kitchen window". Still have no idea what it means. And not sure care when I can hear "orange clouds roll by" and "thunder precedes the sunlight". Awesome sounds.

Shelly (looking out) (54,593) by Andrew from UK
I think Gospel or Standards are a great sound but I think Mariah could incorporate them into a new sound of hers later on, not do it as a stop gap. I think music artists record their best work when they disappear and come back with a cathartic outpouring, and create songs of experience. I keep thinking of Madonna's Ray Of Light. Everyone counted Madonna out. She all but disappeared. She was middle of the road for 5 years and forgettable. But we all know that album as being a shock and of a time in our lives. Mariah has been hit-maker and never left her formula much, even though it's not winning anyone over anymore. And the sob story songs (don't get me wrong I sing them all the time) aren't washing with people anymore. It must be really hard to let go. And a little scary. But then it's never easy. I think she can do it. What sound it should be I have no idea. I'm not musically creative. But I do buy music and watch the trends like everyone else. Let her comeback (and that's what it has to be) be unique and born of a reinvention. If she just has the balls to try it, I will never complain again. So, I guess, the idea is: instead of looking in, I would say Mariah needs to start looking out. And, in a way, I'll work on that, myself.

American boy (54,591) by Andrew from UK
Adam, mate, I'm always on point. You people just be all Tea. (Yeah, I don't know what it means, so I just use it in random places now to confuse people.) The previous post is pretty much what I've been advising in semi-loud tones from the rooftops for two years, amongst the ravings. Actually, I just said it differently. I will add this: if she doesn't go away and reinvent herself, she should retire. It's only going to go one way, otherwise. But like I said, I considered just giving her up a couple of days ago after the posts on here. I questioned whether I would, in this small corner of my life, be happier. But I'm not giving up on her. As an aside, to everyone else, play, or just read and hear, MIAM in this order, and ask yourself what other Mariah album it reminds you of:
1. Meteorite
2. The Art of Letting Go
3. Beautiful
4. Cry.
5. You Don't Know What To Do
6. Make It Look Good
7. Money (S * /. . . )
8. Dedicated
9. One More Try
10. Heavenly (No Way's Tired/ Can't Give Up Now)
Answers on a postcard.

Reinvention (54,580) by Andrew from UK
Taking a break doesn't necessarily mean just stopping to disappear for a while, it can be about reinvention: considering new sounds, getting new experiences and a new outlook for lyrical creativity (no more cringe cougar-down-with-the-kids "tea" stuff), actually doing something about her voice, meeting new people (new producers, new friends, even). Fans who are dribbling at the thought of new music from Mariah that isn't going to bomb are, dare I say... She needs a reinvention, a sound and image overhaul, as Madonna did with Ray Of Light, or Whitney did with My Love Is Your Love. Taking a break - a year or two - to reinvent herself could work. Jumping into a studio with Jermaine Dupri and bashing out another similar sounding album with similar cover with similar stagecraft won't. And, I will say, if to certain people that sounds like I like the Mariah of bygone eras and I don't like the current Mariah - well, you may think so, and you may well be right. But I prefer not to give up. I can't believe she brought me this far to leave me.

The Erik exorcism (54,499) by Andrew from UK
I believed your name was Erik, through previous posts. If that's not correct then correct me. If you don't want me here then block me. To be unwelcome by a moderator no less of a board is enough in itself to make me leave. And Mimi L, as much hatred as I'm seen as having for Mariah, I love "lambs" with the reason and constraint as you have. In person I think we'd have fun. Although that's perhaps a leap. Don't let naysayers silence you. We love in different ways. But I wouldn't exist if I didn't have other love feed off. I wish you well. I wish you all well. Unicorns and all. Okay, maybe not the unicorns.

Mimi L and outfits (54,493) by Andrew from UK
I wasn't saying that's all you're about. I'm just saying it's not what I'm about. You mentioned outfits I have to fight hard to picture Mariah wearing. Keep doing what you do. You do it better than most. Even if your posts, too, sometimes don't quite agree with me.

Erik (54,492) by Andrew from UK
Erik, it was quite apparent that you would post, from previous experience. And true to it, again "I'm not one of you" essentially. Well if my opinion is contrary to what you want for this board then just block me. I'm not embarrassed or ashamed. Many people seem to appreciate what I say. And most people are quite adept at ignoring it if they don't. I won't give up twenty two years, two thirds of my life almost, watching it descend into ridicule. And I'm not the type of person who can post about things like clothes. If having a contrary commentary here doesn't serve the purpose just block me. I won't come under a different name. I'm not comfortable with group coercion. And I will wish you well, and those who supported contrary opinions. As someone said: "This is my truth." If people want to stay in contact I can provide my email address. I'll just go. And always wonder where the unicorns are. Because lately I just don't see them. Thunder always precedes sunlight. And that's why naysayers keep going. [Webmaster: Who's Erik? I can't remember anyone posting here with the name Erik.]

Darren you're a hero (54,487) by Andrew from UK
Hi Darren, I'm no voice expert (cue people tapping away) but I would think reasonably this: if I overwork a muscle, say a bicep, and I've damaged it, would I really be told to pump it back to its peak or would I be told to go away and heal? Genuinely I think it's an interesting point. But with the Mariah will get better vocally the longer a tour goes on, my question is this: if you can sing all your songs at home, which she must do quite a lot, then where is the logic in the premise? I guess I'm just quite confused about the argument. Doesn't she sing at home? Why does it take concerts for the warm-up? Surely by this point then, Hero should not be lipped at all?

Billy don't be a hero (54,485) by Andrew from UK
If you don't like my messages, don't read them. I'm not convinced you understand them anyway. Dressing up "I don't like what you say so stop saying it" in your [censored] just emphasises my last point. It made me actually laugh in pity. And it emphasises another's point as to how it's always the "don't say anything negative because we get militant" camp who are vicious. Which is true. If I really get on your nerves, which it is clear I do, just don't read my messages. I post less because the responses can be tedious (as in GG's post earlier). I don't think lip-syncing the climax of Hero is anything to be happy about and I'll leave it for you or Mimi L to tell me what outfits look good on Mariah because that ain't my bag. To make the point emphatically for you once more: it is not in any way ethical or dignified for you to say that people who post about Mariah must follow your ideology or get lost. You act as if there's legitimate debate and this is an open forum whereas I and others have told you that it is increasingly not that way. Dressing up your drivel in a post attempting to be clever and authoritative is the same nasty tired approach but with a bow on top. So don't read my posts. Don't. There's my name and my actual face. Right there. But something tells me you just had to read this one, too. Itchy under your skin is it? GG you were always great in your (brief) posts. Post more often. It's better than the illuminati paying Nick to make Tommy burn Mariah's effigy etc.

Crusades to Unicornicopia (54,463) by Andrew from UK
As someone who has received criticism (although sometimes just) and abuse from many on this board, I know how it can be. There is a group of about 6-10 people who slap each other on the back and praise each other in their Mariah-religious orthodoxy ("thank you for insulting that person, girlfriend" etc.) who essentially now control everything here. Admittedly, there are some people here who are really thoughtful (I liked the response about Mariah's voice and the reason for not resting it, although I think Mariah can sing her voice back to strength without a camera aimed at her) who I shan't name for fear of hypocrisy. I remember a lot of interesting straight-talking people who used to post here who have now [...] off. Not because there's "nothing to complain about" but because, ostensibly, it has become a place where you either tow the party-political line (ie. live in the CTTA cover artwork) or get lynched. Anyone remember Stephen M from London? There are so many people who were interesting to read who dont bother anymore. Just a hotbed of people who see Mariah as their crusade. To those persons I would say this: I, and others, love Mariah, even if you do not like the way we do it nor openly admit the same worries and concerns. You do not have dominion over Mariah-fandom because you consider yourself more worthy, and you do not get to banish people from the kingdom just because they argue vehemently whenever you declare that there are unicorns in it.

View from a cushion (54,399) by Andrew from UK
Attempting to silence people in your party who may disagree with you or raise contrary opinions is well-documented in history to have been done by the most unpleasant of persons. It says a lot more about you than the person doing the complaining. To Randy, you are right. Mariah now misses notes completely, runs out of breath and is spending a fortune on glue to keep her fixed to stage centre. I would postulate that most Mariah fans are hiding behind a cushion every time she performs "live". A break is definitely needed. And I'm not sorry for saying so. I believe many people will agree, also. People should stop apologising in advance of, or even after, voicing criticism or disdain, for fear of the onslaught of others. There are no sinister forces at play, there is no giant conspiracy, and this is not an alternate dimension where repeating things without evidence turns them into fact. Mariah's failures are her own just as are her successes. The output is not relevant and people mocking her is mostly due to the way she behaves, although much less cringe recently. But enough that the cushion is within reaching distance, still.

The Morgan misrepresentation (54,268) by Andrew from UK
Likely Mariah is bi-polar, it would explain a lot. However, so what? Most people seem to be these days. I dare say, I may be. Her own medical status is not for tabloids. But what of Morgan Carey? I wonder what their mother thinks? Shame on him. She drinks, come to the UK, we are global masters at it. She's weird, so would I be if I were stupendously rich and globally adored. A plague on him for allowing the Dog's Breath of journalism to pollute the world with untruths, exaggeration and condescension in the pathetic pursuit of personal wealth. Let everybody else concentrate on the quality and relevancy of her musical output and promotion techniques. And let Morgan Carey spend his few, tainted thousands anyway he likes and thank Mariah every day for it.

Infinitely cringeworthy (54,210) by Andrew from UK
Whoever said now the video is out to put this whole "era" to rest is bang on the money. The closet scene probably has Mariah fans globally wishing they could go back in it. Cringe. Since when is it interesting to watch someone in a music video scroll through an app on their phone, take a weirdly long selfie and stand in a closet as if the cameraman was saying "Be sexy for me or you'll never leave." And the lip-syncing on stage with the weird facial freezing? Cringe. Who sanctioned this? The listening to the fans idea posted has been screamed about by many people for a while. It doesn't happen, though. She may get somewhere again if she did. Bring back the class. The output is no longer anywhere near the calibre of today's relevant artists.

Yes yes yes (53,830) by Andrew from UK
Yes yes yes. Mariah? You're there? Slag off American Idol, say what happened. Talk to us rather than talk about lighting "might as well" bullshit. If you're gonna be the all important diva we want you to act it. You're opinion matters when you talk sense and are insightful and interesting. Puts comments by the young ones into perspective. Go with this. As for people abandoning the board, it's not because there's not much to be negative about. It's because criticism/debate seems to have been shut down. Not least by the moderator himself. Mariah Daily it isn't. However if I suggest that there is rampant lip-syncing in Vegas I imagine I'll be jumped upon. I do think goin off radar and leaving fans to dangle about what's coming up (and waiting upon Christmas) is not fair. Tell us what is coming up and what music to expect. Time to be open and honest. It may be a good thing.

Troof (53,781) by Andrew from UK
Bit typical of this board to annihilate someone because an article claimed someone was less than complimentary about Mariah. Never mind facts or "the truth". Bit like the continuous annihilation of Nick Cannon, despite Mariah never having said anything negative, and the need to try to find "shade" in her songs, about him. On a lighter note, I saw a Mariah Carey CD in a supermarket here today. For sale. For actual money. Hasn't happened since 2008. Kinda cool. She simply needs a killer Pop/Dance track a la Fantasy/Heartbreaker with a video a week later and an album a week after that covered with furious promo and she might pull it off. But what do I or the general populous know? The video for Infinity is awesome, I'm sure. I'm not sure why they bothered filming one, at this point. And what of doing Vegas again next year in the same guise? Who is going to care? I think LA Reid was right about expectancy of Mariah's career. But I think Mariah fans deserve some truth about what they can expect from her future endeavours.

GMB / BBMA / JLo / IKR (53,491) by Andrew from UK
Mariah is on Good Morning Britain tomorrow morning. Unless I hallucinated *this* morning. And BBMA's was alright. I'm not sure what the point of lipping anything anymore is given that the whole world now knows. As for the criticism: The only way to dispel negativity is to name a date and stand there and hit these studio notes live. Not the nineties ones but the recent ones. Nobody's heard above an "and it was all" live in a decade. Every time it scrapes that, am I the only one who wonders when these studio notes are created? There must be some polyjuice potion in those there studios. But she looked good. JLo looked good, too. Surprised she didn't run on stage and announce her new number ones album. Well, EP.

How JLo can you get? (53,260) by Andrew from UK
Laughing my ass off. JLo announces Las Vegas residency? Is this real? "Look everyone, the all new improved JLo 2015 just doesn't try to steal your songs your identity - now she'll steal your thunder." I'm not one to get into fan arguments, but seriously I laughed out loud. If I was Mariah [censored] And Jennifer, yes she did sell more. A lot more. [censored]

Of time (52,651) by Andrew from UK
And the song is shit. I said my piece about what she needed to do and I gave it a shot. The musical direction is beyond me. If it was YDKWTD I'm certain it would rock the charts. Block me from the board, censor me, I don't care. I genuinely don't feel like I belong around Mariah fans anymore. It's not you guys fault. I queston what it is I love. If it's the past, I feel sad. Thumbs up me and I'll leave. I promise. This isn't an ego trip. It's probably more of an affirmation. I love you all for loving MC. We love in different ways. Thunder precedes the sunlight. So I'll be alright. Big love [censored].

Till The End (52,650) by Andrew from UK
Martyn, thanks. I even tried to get a London fan get together started with people who since left the board. I think sing along and discussion in person is great. I'm often shut down because in person it's just an opinion and I'm always happy when I make it: even when I say "she should just quit". I'm genuinely okay. I like hearing why she shouldn't. My life is Mariah Carey based. I think even Americans like Shelly and Mimi L etc would be great to have in that type of environment. The Greek guy, Canadian Marcel I'm absolutely positive that one of you guys saying "okay shut up, what about this point?" would make me laugh/smile and think before I debated. I am vocal but we are all. I just choose to say my piece.

The existence of Infinity (52,500) by Andrew from UK
After several tries, ambivalence still. The beginning and ending are musical theatre and genius. However the R&B boring "you make me feel"-esque stuff is so out of date. And the voice does sound really arid, autotuned and chopped. But it's not the production that sucks, it's actuakly kinda theatrical and unique sounding. What sucks is the melody and lyrics and the need for Mariah to try to be clever in every song. Why can't a great, accessible pop song arise? Why does every song need about fifty melodies tacked on to each other? Maybe to hide the voice. It seems even big fans now aren't hearing what they used to hear. And everyone is cringing at lyrics including "Fritos". And the morality of the song: dissing your so-called baby-daddy? One disastrous decision after another, indulging a singer who is too aloof and arrogant to question why all record labels eventually get pissed off. Yet I don't hate it. I don't. It's confusing me. But I don't like it. It think, maybe, it just exists. [Webmaster: We were al wondering, what took you so long before you write another negative message?]

The art of wanting greatness (52,409) by Andrew from UK
Hi Eric (if I recall right? Sorry if I do not). I think most fans will love the new song because most fans seem to be die hard fans who think Marah excretes music awards. And fair play. All artists have their die-Garda. Mariah fans loving her isn't the marker, I would suggest. The problem, I believe, is MC's music and image appealing to non-fans. TEOM went global because Mariah did what Whitney did in 98/99: she had attitude and sophistication in her sound and image. That's is: even straight guys bought into it, and you can't be successful, for the most part, without them. Infinity is half way between me being dubious and loving it. I feel kind of odd about it. It has attitude, but is sometimes too girly. And too overthought as Mariah's music so often is now. There's a lot going on. It has more moments of Mariah genius but other moments of RnB malaise (like going to a club and dancing only for a sit-down sofa-song to come on). I just drove back from work with a few listens and will pump it out now to come to grips with it. But non-Mariah fans won't do that. And that's where the problem lies.
