All I Ever Wanted vs Whenever You Call (39,574)
by Will from Australia

I can't believe I never noticed this until today, but I was listening to All I Ever Wanted and Walter A came into my mind and literally while listening to All I Ever Wanted I paid more attention to the background arrangement of the music and realised it's actually an early version of Whenever You Call. Granted, WYC is much more dramatically sung by Mariah, but there's even similarities in the vocals. Go listen to them and see if anyone else agrees, or disagree "I will hunt you down."

I much prefer part II of One And Only. I never liked the original and always skipped it, but the second version I used to play on repeat.

Grammy / vocal peak (39,549)
by Will from Australia

I think it's not just the Grammies but on most live versions of WBT Mariah uses the lip sync for the key change chorus and I completely agree with that body launguage statement used to disguise the lip sync. But so what? I'd rather she did that than try and strain her vocal and have another MJ memorial episode. When I think about vocal peak I focus mainly on her live performances as anyone can sound fantastic on a record. The Daydream tour I struggle to identify a single questionable lip sync performance, seems all live and her tone and fluidity is off the charts. Later tours and live performances is when I started to noticing these moments of sync. I have to say though that I was blown away at the quality of her voice in Sydney this year, especially the "Loves takes time" cameo she did, wow I thought, she's still got it!

Vocal peak (39,523)

It's really interesting to hear people talk about the Emotions era as MCs vocal peak. I don't actually think that the album is underrated at all, for me the fast jams are too over produced and some of the ballads are just forgettable in terms of a Mariah ballad. When I listen to the Daydream tour, I am just in awe of her vocal ability then, I actually prefer those versions of her songs than the actual studios, Without You, Open Arms, and especially I Don't Wanna Cry which she makes sound like it was from the Daydream album, incredible but that's just my opinion!

This new era (39,505)

I'm excited about the new single and hopefully the album drops soon after. I am also a bit weary about getting too optimistic, as in the past few years Mariah has talked up a lot of her new songs and they've just been average - Triumphant, Bring It On Home, Almost Home and Beautiful. I hope she stays away from auto tune as there was way too much of that on Memoirs and limits those whispery vocals to 2 or 3 individual songs rather than switching into it in parts on every track. This record is so huge for her.

I listened to both those songs just now, I never heard of them artists before. I Wish You Loved Me has very similar piano arrangement to We Belong Together and she sings a verse in the first course that reminded me of "I want you to cores me like a tropical breeze" in TMB. I think it's deliberate to try make her a star by mimicking Mimi. I'm struggling to find any comparisons with the other track aside from her being a female singer lol. Good to hear new music though.

When You Believe (39,238)
by Will from Australia
| |
|
|
This has irritated me for a number of years and maybe someone here can give me a reason for it. When You Believe peaked at 15 on the Hot 100 and is a great song that's been covered many times, but I don't understand how it failed to appear on Whitneys original two disc Greatest Hits (2000). It did appear a few years later on her Ultimate Collection (2007), but again was dropped for The Best in 2012. The interesting thing is that the ultimate collection was only an 18 track cd and the other two were double discs. What's going on? Considering both these albums have much lesser hits, is it just a record label conflict?

Ariana Grande / Celine (39,212)

I just listened to her new album. It's alright, no where in the league of Mariah in terms of lyrics or vocals. To be honest, she should be compared to Jessica Simpson if anything, sounds more similar to her IMO. Almost Is Never Enough was the highlight track for me. I don't hate on her like some others, I welcome new female artists and she is talented. On the other hand, I also checked out Celine Dions new single Loved Me Back To Life and I have to say I'm very impressed that she hasn't had an album in 6 years and yet stays true to herself without trying massively to compete with the kids. Take note Mimi!

Last No 1 (39,193)
by Will from Australia
| |

|
It's funny but during the Glitter and Charmbraclet era I thought how annoying it was that Thank God I Found You could end up being her last No.1 as it's below par to some of her other hits and now I feel the same about Touch My Body. I like TMB, buts it's just a fun record and not one of her better efforts, kinda wish We Belong Together would have been the last, but wish more than anything for a smash single from the new album.

Bad songs / covers (39,123)
by Will from Australia

I completely agree with The Webmaster - EFA is flawless and I've always hoped she would record a similar track to that again, Looking In would be the closest effort. There are lots of songs I have to skip, mainly the early mid tempo songs - "Sent from up above" and "To be around you". I was thinking the other day about covers Mariah has recorded and how they've mostly been 80s. The rise of Idol and X Factor etc have kinda killed the cover genre, but it's still possible to pull it off and I'd love Mariah to try cover a 90s or even more recent track and out a different take on it. Bon Jovi Always or something unpredictable like November Rain by GnR. She could actually release a covers album at this stage, 9 albums have all had a cover - "I'll be there", "Without you", "Open arms", "Beautiful ones", "I still believe", "Do you know where you're going to", "Against all odds", "Last night a dj saved my life", "Bringin' on the heartbreak", "I wanna know what love is".

Randy / great game (38,945)
by Will from Australia
| |

|
Great game Randy. From releases that didn't hit number one I'd have to say AIWFCIY was a big disappointment. Without You is still one of my favourite vocals of hers and I wish that would have hit the top. Would've liked to have seen When I Saw You and Whenever You Call (solo) get released and more recently Ribbon, which I thought was very current and a missed opportunity. (Look at Miley Cyrus We Can't Stop now which is quite similar.)
