Rainbow was bigger than Daydream (102,807)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Please let's not be delusional here. Just no. Absolutely nothing about Rainbow can be rated close to Daydream, talk less of higher. Just nothing. That album has no form, is full of hideous fillers (the first for her at the time) her vocals have no form either, her voice is shot on the record, sounding hoarse and gravelly, like she was sick or something and the brash airiness of her voice (damage from the world tour the prior year) is so off-putting. That era was actually the beginning of her downfall and exhaustion, and had she slowed down, Glitter and the breakdown would not have happened.

Rainbow was bigger than Daydream (102,785)

20 years has passed since I talked to one of Mariah's old team members, so I'll spill. No, the actual promotion for Rainbow was extremely limited whereas they spent millions promoting Daydream. Rainbow was self-promoted more specifically by Mariah than any other album since her debut. Rainbow wasn't supposed to happen. The next project was Glitter, so her promo budget was cut in half. Half for Rainbow and half for Glitter. Mariah made a deal with Walmart to get more funding for her album, but it came with a promotional tour of their stores. It was the first time Mariah toured the Midwest since her debut. She not only did a lot of promo on any tv show she could find and anywhere Walmart wanted her to promote, but she also did any local radio station where ever she was. It was non stop interviews and performances. There was no "2 days rest" for live vocals while she was working 15 hour days, she did when she could. Baby girl's voice was sore for most of '99 when album promo officially began.

My issue with Rainbow (102,752)

Excuse you? Speak for yourself Robert. The only thing he leads here is negativity and confusion, trying to bring Mariah down with every chance he gets. As well as being a broken record that plays only two songs. "What happened to her voice since 1997" and "Right to dream".

Prelude to my next topic (102,743)

I have comprised some overall stats of Rainbow and Daydream in all areas and I have discovered some impressive stats. What I have discovered about Rainbow compared Daydream will get everybody talking and shine new light on MC as a brilliant artist. Rainbow was a huge success story for MC despite how Tommy sabotage its success. MC had total creative control during the recording and promotion of Rainbow while Tommy still had his puppet strings on MC during Daydream. Daydream was an enormous success, but MC lost such much control during the album promotion and looked defeated during her Grammys lost when she gave Columbia the best album of her career at the time. I will leave it there. I don't want share too much more of what I discovered about Rainbow being a huge triumph for MC. I don't think Rainbow has ever been called MC's liberation album But that is exactly what it was before Mimi was emancipated. Stay tuned for new post Saturday evening. Let me know your thoughts today. Agree or disagree?

Not to add insult to injury, but this is clearly voice issues not just vocal, as in singing, issues. I noticed multiple times when Mariah was speaking to the crowd, like when she yelled welcome Boys 2 Men [Boyz II Men], her voice broke and she didn't complete the phrase. That was just with her speaking. Something is very very wrong. But it's Mariah Carey, and if anyone can bounce back, it will be her.

by Terna from Nigeria

Let's not be too hard on her, and still remember that she might be doing the best she can with what's left of her ability right now, which from the clips we saw is not much. Her voice issues are serious seeing as how many times she kept sipping tea and still it wasn't enough. At this point, her options are slim – it's voice therapy or the much dreaded surgery. Being in her shoes must be very scary as we all know what happened to Bonnie Tyler's voice and Julie Andrews more recently. I know it scares Mariah to think of surgery and putting her gift, career and future all on the line. What I want to see Mariah do is a lifestyle change and to seek professional help. Build your voice from the ground back up again with a voice therapist and a vocal coach, those exercises really do work. Find out what you've been doing wrong and correct that technique. You'll be surprised how much of her vocal problems are superficial.

New low? (102,675)

So I've just seen YouTube videos from the last show and I'm speechless. MC even lipped a part of VOL. The one thing I thought she'd never do. Her voice is shot. Idk what happened firing the Covid break but her voice got way worse even compared to 2019/2020 vocals. What is happening?
It looks like she has a bunch of yes people around her but someone should sit her down and tell her that she needs to get her shit together or just quit. I hate people saying "she has nothing to proof anymore" well of course she is (was) one of the greatest but if she wants to continue her career as a singer she should get her voice together or throw her golden mic away.
If it's the nodules she should get them removed now. I don't care if she loses her whistles. It's not like she can whistle now. It sounds very unpleasant with her current tone. I would be more the fine if she lipped whistles instead of lipping half of the song like she's doing now. I'm not even starting the VOL conversation. I'm sad, disappointed and scared for her. Please Mariah. Get the help you need.

The whistle or the complete voice? (102,676)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
She should invest in a qualified vocal coach, an expensive one. I don't know where she got that "nodules aid her with that register" crap, having nodules is an Achilles heel to any and every type of singer and she's no exception, and also even a medical condition that requires immediate attention and resolve. Mariah had such a lush, full, clean voice that was well rounded from low to high, even her high notes had a certain heft and clarity to them, from 1990 to 1994 is where I would say her voice thrived and was at its best. The minute she lost those qualities by the "Daydream" era, there already was a problem. This is the time she should've stepped back and cancelled or postponed shows to rest a little.

The whistle or the complete voice? (102,670)
by TheWind from England

If it's true that Mariah has nodules on her vocals that have damaged her voice, but allow her to facilitate the whistle register, what would you rather? Mariah to get surgery and lose the whistle register, but return to an overall healthy voice, or maintain the whistle register and continue to work around the nodules? This is a purely speculative post, as I don't know that she has nodules etc, and I have no clue what's wrong with her voice. If it is true, I'd much rather she lip whistle notes for the rest of her career and sing everything in between in a healthy voice.

Not even close, and that was a time with no social media platforms, nor streaming views yet her popularity was a this global mammoth lasting frenzy, right from her debut album that even lasted well into the 2000's and with Mariah it wasn't just with the young generation at the time, it was every age demographic. She was and still is the real deal.

Do you think that Taylor Swift's enormous popularity right now is mirroring MC's popularity years of 1993-1998? It just seems to me that her fanbase had really increased out nowhere in the past 3 years. She is definitely a business woman who knows what to give her fans to make them go crazy and spend money. One thing, I would like to know is why she can't get a man to put a ring on it? She has had more boyfriends that has exceeded the number of fingers on MC's one hand. You know I had to quote MC. Lol.

What is your initial fan story? (102,636)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

It was multiple occurrences for me. And random pop ups of her music anytime I was on MTV, or on the radio trying to capture my favorite music videos and songs on VHS and cassette respectively. (Good old 90's.) Then I started to take note that she was the singer of so many songs I knew, loved, but didn't know who sang them - "Love Takes Time", "Vision of Love" (finally watched the video while going "oh, it has a video"?), "Anytime you need a friend" and "Hero". I was a die hard Céline fan and so when buying a new Céline CD, I also bought Mariah's new CD - "Butterfly".

Observation (102,439)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
Your little video doesn't prove anything Randy, because most of the "excuses" were actually complaints of her having to get up early in the morning to sing which many other credible singers and performers have also echoed from Whitney Houston to Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Michael Bolton etc. Even most recently Chaka Khan's comment on Mary J. Blige's cover of her song referenced this well known fact - singers do not wake up early to sing well first thing in the morning. It is a common phenomenon they all know.

As tired as you are of us picking Mariah apart, we are tired of being told that we are not fans and we are evil people. Nobody's mad because MC doesn't have the same voice as 1990. Hell, she didn't even have the same voice in 1998. The real issue is the deception and the excuses. How did she go from saying publicly, :I would never lip sync" in the 90s to lip syncing most of her climaxes in 99 and beyond? And then not telling us what happened? I didn't want to do this on this board but a few years ago, I put together all of MCs excuses. In her own words. I don't ever argue without receipts. Oh and I still love MC. You can view the video here.

Vocal nodules (102,317)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
I think she should explore other options like speech therapy first, giving up bubbly and see if it helps, then surgery if it does not. There's qualities an sections of her voice missing now as a result of singing the way she does after developing nodules. 1996 is when Mariah damaged her voice touring with developing nodules (one could already hear that airiness creeping in) and then again in 1998 and finally 1999, her voice was shot - just [pop] in the [Rainbow] CD and listen. I look forward to seeing her blow again on stage but not just that, work with a qualified coach this time to maintain her instrument and be disciplined as a singer of her caliber should. Remind the world again why that name "Mariah Carey" is [music] personified.

That statement has envy written over it. She isn't half the artist or singer Mariah is and she knows this. Chaka's career has been hit and miss, more misses than hits. I mean take away "Tell Me Something Good" with Rufus, "Through The Fire" and "I'm Every Woman" (a song Whitney Houston sang better if I might add) and there goes her career. "Sweet Thing" the song Mary Blige covered also is a better take than hers even if she wrote it. Smh. To say I was disappointed in how she carried herself in that interview is an understatement.

Who cares about the Grammy's? (102,194)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
That particular Grammy category is quite controversial, but also has a lot of boxes to check for one to win. What I noticed is that the body of work has to stand for something other than just a collection of hit songs. Most albums that have indeed won in the category were "themed" albums, but also powerful statements made by the various artists at that time. Notable works include: "Thriller" by Michael Jackson, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill", “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” by Outkast, "Taking the Long Way" by The Dixie Chicks ,"Faith" by George Michael to name a few. However, as in the case of Mariah, she's been robbed multiple times I would say in this category not just with "Daydream" and "The Emancipation of Mimi" but also "Butterfly" (her strongest contender) which was not even nominated - an album of the year kind of album without a doubt. It's not surprising to see Beyonce lose this category over and over, she isn't a true artist in the vein of Bonnie Raitt, Prince, Adele, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Alisson Krauss, Aretha Franklin, Santana etc. The closest she came was with the "Lemonade" album and in all honesty that was a much better record than Adele's "25" and Adele knew this too. Oh well, like Drake even said on their own show, the real reward is having feedback in the form of acknowledgment and gratitude from your fans and casual listeners that your music resonates with the masses and actually touches lives, now that is the true win, and Mariah especially is number one winner when it comes to that. We know it and they know it too.

It's rather funny to see people coming to Beyonce's defense for why she didn't win the album of the year. To me, it's rather an embarrassment to hear her on radio as if it can be called music. It sure seems like she is an early adoption of ChatGPT - using AI to work on her album and maybe her singing too. Anyways, Rarities truly is the best works MC released in past 10 years or so. My 2 cents.

Butterfly tour footage - Sydney (102,131)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
You can hear her voice very clear in these clips, it's a very clear recording. Unfortunately, one can also hear how damaged her voice was even then (1998). How did you manage to fry your instrument in just 8 years? She's really struggling vocally especially on "My All" the incessant scratches one can hear and the whistle notes in "Emotions" are very weak and airy and almost not even picked up by the [microphone]. I don't know what Mariah's problem is, but one would think that developing nodules would've gotten her serious about the technical aspects of singing, how they came to be, what she did wrong and how to remedy the situation because any trained and qualified vocal coach would let you know. Instead she adjusted her singing style and the way she pronounced words going from rounded glossed vowel sounds, to a jarring unpleasant strained sound, adding even more pressure and kept on managing the situation. It's so unfortunate how she had this glorious instrument and just totally ruined it, literally threw it away.

Memoirs is underrated (102,120)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|
|
"That is the beauty of Mariah's catalog, there's still so much to explore because some of them didn't necessarily explore when they were released initially". Yes of course no one is denying this but fact is she needs to be releasing new songs not trying to make those old songs "happen" so to speak. They're still old songs that didn't get their chance for whatever reason, and the window of opportunity closed. That ship has long sailed and sunk at sea.

by jaker20 from US

Well I disagree. They are still accessible Mariah songs, they are still very pop and can have a second life with a few cute viral moments here and there. With the Gen Z and Alpha, they will dig it because they still fresh. Obsessed did go viral a few years ago because it has a timeless chorus. In fact I listen to E=MC2 more than Emancipation. Now there is about a dozen songs I listen to regularly between that and Memoirs. Emancipation is undoubtedly a masterpiece, but are you really going to listen to it every day for 15 years? That is the beauty of Mariah's catalog, there's still so much to explore because some of them didn't necessarily explore when they were released initially.
I find H.A.T.E.U to be absolutely haunting, Standing O has a really great beat, and I used to hate Angels Cry and I bet if she lends it to a show it can have a huge revival. It sounds timeless.

Memoirs is underrated (102,109)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

|
Apart from "Obsessed" being released as a single and being a monster hit it was, I really did not see another tangible single release from "Memoirs" as to me Mariah was not really in search of [hits] per say. The album is "moody" as someone here pointed out and none of the songs single material. But then again, having only one producer team Tricky and The Dream was to blame for that. Save for "The Emancipation of Mimi", Mariah really did struggle in the 2000's and has ever since.

Memoirs worked because of The-Dream. It was a fun album. It was the last album that MC poured her heart and soul into. The-Dream said that MC kept him into the studio all night until 6am. One fun fact about Memoirs is that Obsessed was the only single to have an official 12 inch vinyl release.

Never Forget You (102,095)
by Terna from Nigeria

Yeah, same here. I feel this is the reason why we haven't gotten another Mariah [studio album]. I miss that a lot. She barely got "Caution" out and even then it was evident that something wasn't quite right with her voice. Where do we go from here? Well, I would suggest training her main voice (not the whistle/whisper register that register is parasitic and actually feeds off your main voice), and invest in singing straws. The human voice is very resilient since it is living tissue, and heals quite easily when bad habits are eliminated.

Just wondering about the Lambs thought if MC could sing NFY in the same key today from beginning to end. I think that she could in a relaxed setting in front Lambs.

How did I forget this beautiful song. Man, these are the things that makes one realize time has gone by and [no] Mariah it's not 25 minutes. Lol.

The vocal performance award (102,064)

One of the reasons I think Mariah lost so many "vocal performance" awards at the Grammys is the fact that most of her earlier recordings were "polished" so to speak, done in multiple takes and the best parts being used, giving her this flawless studio recording every time, especially the first half of the 90's. Yes she was always nominated (at some point Mariah was the most nominated female artist at the Grammys and most were for vocal performance) but she always lost to other females that one could hear most likely did those songs in one take. From the first album, [only] "Vision of Love" is sung in one take (the 2nd Mariah doing all that insane ad-libbing) and what do you know? She won for Pop Vocal and then again with "We Belong Together" another one take song, won best R&B vocal performance. So I do think the Grammys acknowledge singers who don't gloss their vocals. Just a thought. What do you guys think?
