Mariah Carey live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2014
This is the latest news in August 2014 where the Grammy winning superstar is set to perform at Stadium Merdeka on 22nd October. Supported fully by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Major Events, a local concert promoter has won a bid to get her to perform here just two days before her Singapore concert and also part of her world tour series. This is amazing news for Malaysians as the country has been trying hard to get her to perform here.
The Malaysia concert is also the start of her Southeast Asia leg of her world tour before heading to Singapore and then to the Philippines. Even more exciting, Mariah Carey has decided to launch her world tour here in Asia before the United States. Though Mariah has also not announced what songs she will perform in KL, it is expected that her latest album, "Me, I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse" will be part of the line-up. Mariah Carey will also be performing live in Japan and China before coming to KL for her second concert here.
As this is the second time Mariah Carey is going to perform in Malaysia, her first time here was back on 20th February 2004 and also at the same venue of Stadium Merdeka, her 90 minute show attracted over 30,000 fans. She opened the provious concert with her hit song "Heartbreker" while driving onto the stage in an open top BMW convertible. She later told her Malaysian fans that she normally changed about eight costumes for her concert but had to make an exception for her Malaysian concert as the dress code regulations required her to stick to one safe outfit. Mariah said "I'm so sorry that I'm so boring but I'm just playing by the rules."
Recently in early August after the news that Mariah Carey was performing in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Communications And Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari told The Rakyat Post (local daily), there was a process and guideline to getting this approval that the concert promoter must follow.
"Looking back at previous cancellations and even the incident in Selangor (FMFA) we don't want any repeats," he said, referring to the death of six people due to methamphetamine overdose at the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2014 at Bukit Jalil Stadium, recently.
"There is ample time for the promoters to adhere to these guidelines and comply with our requirements," he said, pointing out that tickets should not be sold before these conditions are met. "If they are using a stadium, they must get authorities to approve it as well. They must comply with these guidelines to make sure safety and due diligence is carried out before hosting the concert," he said.
He added that a concert in the magnitude of Carey would spark a lot of fan attention. "Therefore it would be a responsible move for them to get the approvals and represent her in the best manner," he said.
