Io Echo's dreamy cover of Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker"

Of all the acts you'd expect moody L.A. dream pop duo Io Echo to cover, Mariah Carey might not be at the top of your list. But Carey's catalogue of undeniable hits has been the eternal wellspring from which so much musical inspiration is found these days.

Grimes said the first time she heard Mariah sing, "It shattered the fabric of my existence." Io Echo's version of "Heartbreaker" is both reverent to the song's genius and completely bold in how much it changes the song up.

In collaboration with TOKiMONSTA, Io Echo has muffled the tune's pep with a slowness and melodrama that befits the subject matter. The cover is from their upcoming mixtape of artistic collaborations, I've Been Vaping Your Tears, which comes out Wednesday.
